The city of Nara is located 40 km south of Kyoto. This was Japan's first capital and remained as such until the 8th century, when it was moved to Kyoto. The province of Nara today has around 1.4 million inhabitants and holds true historical treasures in its architecture and in the Buddhist and Shinto temples of the city.
Most of Nara's top attractions are in the Nara-Koen Park area, which occupies much of the city and is home to approximately 1,200 deers.
Today, these animals are considered a National Treasure and are all over the park and its surroundings looking for tourists willing to feed them.
In Nara, the constant presence of deer in the streets is one of the city's outstanding features. The deer is considered a messenger of the Gods and therefore it is not disturbed, as it is a sacred animal, coexisting with tourists and visitors to the temples. They live freely in the gardens.
But you have to be a little careful because, despite being used to the presence of people, deer are wild animals, and can bite and headbutt.

Kasuga Taisha temple
Kasuga Taisha is a Shintoist temple, whose god is the protector of deer and that is why they are spread throughout the Nara park where they are cared for and protected. The temple dates from the year 768 and is red in color and decorated with lanterns.
Try to visit the back of the temple where many lanterns are lit in a small dark room. On the 14th and 15th of August all the lanterns in the temple are lit.

The main temple in Nara is Todaiji, built at the beginning of the 8th century under orders from Emperor Shomu who wanted to submit the country to the divine protection of Buddha. Nara's culture and history is heavily based on customs and values imported from China.
The gigantic Todaiji Buddhist Temple is the largest wooden building in the world and what is most impressive about it are its dimensions.
the Big Buddha of this temple is one of the largest bronze statues on the planet, originally cast in the year 746 and later restored during the Edo dynasty. It measures 15 meters high, weighs 437 tons of bronze and 130 kilos of gold.

It is very common to cycle through Nara and you will see many Japanese tourists doing this.
Nara has several temples and historic buildings and the cool thing about renting a bike is to pedal aimlessly and discover everything on your own, at your own time.
There are several bicycle rental houses there and they also rent padlocks and helmets. Just take yours for the desired time and go for a walk!
If it's cherry blossom or koyo season, your walk will be even more beautiful and you can discover corners unexplored by tourists but full of beauty and flowering trees.
How to get to Nara:
Well, before moving on to the city itinerary, I want to clarify that Nara has a super convenient location for day trips from Kyoto or Osaka, being less than an hour away by train in both cases.
If you have a JR Pass, you can make the trip (included in your pass) with the JR Yamatoji Line, which departs from JR Osaka Station and takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. The city's main attractions are within a 10-minute walk from JR Nara Station.
If you want this to be your next destination, BitBook takes care of the details for you!
Weather in Nara
Nara's climate is influenced by the region's mountainous geography. Mists are common, especially during the morning. But don't worry: the climate in the region is temperate, with lows close to 0° in winter and highs of 30° in summer, with temperature peaks that can reach 35°.
Autumn and spring are the best seasons to visit Nara. At these times, temperatures are mild and pleasant. Pay attention to the calendar: between March and April it is possible to find the cherry trees in bloom, at the height of spring; already in October and November it is time for the beautiful colors of autumn to emerge in the landscape of the mountains of Nara.
