One of the most beautiful post-cards of Rio de Janeiro offers a gorgeous view of the whole city.

From Praia Vermelha, the visitants take the first tram links to the Urca hill, and from there, a second tram takes them until the top of the Sugar loaf hill, it stays 396 meters of the sea level. Different histories justify the name of this touristic side; the most popular says that during the centuries XVI and XVIII, at the peak of the production of sugar cane, the producers stored sugar blocks in little boxes to be exported, and the resemblance of the object with Sugar loaf mountain gave origin to the name.

From the high of the two mountains revels a gorgeous landscapes of the city, including the Botafogo cave, Copacabana edge and the entrance of Guanabara bay. In the summer, the amphitheater, located in the top of Urca hill is a stage for shows and night events, joining fun and a wonderful visual of lights of the city.

Youths and kids of 6 to 21 years old, students, seniors and deficient have 50% off. Kids under 6 years old don’t pay.

CHRIST THE REDEEMER

With arms open wide over Guanabara bay, Christ the Redeemer receives the visitants and bless the cariocas.

In the top of the mountain is installed Christ the redeemer, one of the most wanted touristic sides of Rio de Janeiro. The biggest and most famous scripture Art Déco of the world, the Christ statue started to be planned in 1921 and it was developed by the engineer Heitor da Silva Costa over 5 years of job, from 1926 to 1931, the opening year of the monument.

It’s located at Parque Nacional da Tijuca, 710 meters above sea level, where anybody can appreciate one of the most beautiful views of the city. Over all 220 steps that lead to the famous statue feet, it was elected one of the Seven Wonders of the World made by formal voting in 2007 by the Swiss Institution New 7 Wonders Foundation. The monument is accessible by train, van or car.

To get into the monument, there’s a nice ride by train that, for 20 minutes, it crosses Mata Atlântica until Corcovado’s top. Making easy access to the visitants, three panoramic elevators and four escalators were built. The visual is amazing; it makes an unmissable program for those that visit the city. 

BOTANICAL GARDEN

Created in 1808 by D. João VI of Portugal, the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden (JBRJ) is famous for the exuberance and the scientific importance of its plant collection, as well as for the beauty of its landscapes. Its bicentennial history is expressed in its monuments, buildings and artworks.

The visitors can walk along the alleys or rent an electric car to see plants from all over the world, visit the greenhouses (Orchids, Bromeliads, Ferns, Insectivorous Plants) and the thematic collections and gardens, like the Japanese Garden, created in 1935 from the donation of 65 species of tipical Japanese plants.

Among the monuments, we highlight the Visitor’s Center – a XVI century bulding -, the statues of Eco and Narciso by Mestre Valentim, and the Academy of Fine Arts Portal, projected by Grandjean de Montigny. The Garden is also an excellent place for bird watching.

COPACABANA BEACH

Affectionately known by the population of Princess of the Sea, a popular song of the Brazilian João de Barro – Braguinha – and Alberto Ribeiro, Copacabana beach is located in a district of the same name in the South of Rio. Copacabana has bike racks, bike path, kiosks, hotels, bars and restaurants frequented both day and night. It also has two military forts, one at each end of the beach, with panoramic views, open to visitation.

This fascination also goes by the beautiful boardwalk of Atlântica Avenue in black and white Portuguese stones, which form a beautiful mosaic wave form, inspired by the Lisbon boardwalk and used by Roberto Burle Marx on the beach. They have great infrastructure of hotels and kiosks that attracts tourists worldwide.

Stage of the largest New Year’s Eve party on the planet with their fires known worldwide, Copacabana has more than three million people every passing year. It sands are also hosts large events like the Pan American Games Rio 2007 world championships beach soccer and volleyball world championships.

To better enjoy the beaches, nothing better than staying close to them. The South Zone encompasses the neighborhoods of Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon, in addition to being a region known for being very trendy, with restaurants, malls, shops, and much more. You will surely be well served. One of the advantages of staying here is waking up and being close to the sea and with easy access to other parts of Rio, as the neighborhoods are served by subway stations.
