With 11 hairpin turns up the mountainside this drive is not for the faint hearted, but a must see if you're in the region
Easily one of the most famous scenic routes in Norway, with 11 hairpin turns it climbs the mountainside up to Stigrøra 858masl.
On the way to the top the road crosses the bridge above the impressive Stigfossen waterfall and when you reach the top you can park at the visitor center and walk a few minutes to take in the breathtaking view from the constructed viewpoint as seen in the photo above and on the top of the photo below.
The visitor center has a restaurant and the obligatory souvenir shop in addition to toilet facilities.
Most parts of the pathway is accessible by wheelchair, except the lower viewpoint.
There are several hikes that starts from the visitor center, one of them is to Stabbeskaret, on top of the famous Trollveggen - a 1431m high vertical wall. It's a challenging hike and not for the unexperienced ones. If you're still interested you can read my page on it here (to be posted).
If you visit this region and enjoy mountain hikes I would recommend using the city of Åndalsnes as your base, there are several hotels & cottages to choose from by searching for Andalsnes.
I like the cheap, but excellent Trollstigen Resort cottages, if you prefer hotels take a look at Grand Hotel right in the middle of Åndalsnes.
Other locations worth checking out in the region is Geiranger, Gudbrandsjuvet (as seen in the photo below), Loen skyflift, Rampestreken.
