Trekking in South America
The trekking that leads to Mount Fitz Roy is one of the most spectacular to do in Argentine Patagonia. Fitz Roy is one of the mountains of the Andes and has gigantic vertical pillars, which reach an altitude of 3,375 meters. The path is challenging, but well marked, and can be done without the accompaniment of a guide. However, whoever decides to walk it must have resistance and physical conditioning: there are 24 km of route (round trip).
To do this trekking, you must go to the small town of El Chaltén, from where there are several trails in the region. The one that leads to Fitz Roy is the most sought after and allows adventurers to also get to know the Laguna de Los Tres, among other incredible scenarios.
The most famous trekking in Torres del Paine National Park in Chile, Circuit W is 76 km long. To walk through it, at least 5 days of walking are necessary. However, the effort is rewarded by the incredible landscapes that the path reveals. Among the most beautiful places on this trekking are Nordenskjöld Lake, the French Valley, Paine Grande, Cerro Hoja, Cerro Máscara, Cerro Catedral, Cerro Aleta de Tubarão, Cuerno Norte and Lago Grey.
The walk through the W Circuit, despite being long, is not difficult or technical. However, it requires some experience from the traveler, especially for camping in the most appropriate places. There are several campsites and refuges along the route, and ideally, you should have a prior knowledge of how these places are organized.
Brazil also has great trekking options and, of course, one of the most beautiful in South America: the Vale do Pati trail, in Chapada Diamantina National Park. The route is 77 km long, but you can choose different itineraries to get to know the region. The paths are beautiful and reveal viewpoints, plateaus, plains, steep valleys, areas of Cerrado vegetation and also the Atlantic Forest.
Among the main attractions of trekking in Vale do Pati are Mirante do Pati, Cachoeirão, Morro do Castelo and Cachoeira dos Funis. But be prepared, depending on the route you choose to take, you will need a little more physical conditioning. An example is the trail that leads to Morro do Castelo, with a steep stretch that requires climbing. In addition, to cross the valley, you will need the accompaniment of an authorized guide.
Originally Ciudad Perdida, this archaeological paradise in Colombia can be discovered through a sensational trekking. With a length of 42 km, the path consists of a long stone staircase with 1,200 steps in the middle of dense forest. And its ending reveals the surprising Lost City, former home of the indigenous Tayrona civilization.
To do this trekking, it is necessary to go to El Mamay, in the region of Santa Marta, the base city for the tour. The tourist name of the place is Teyuna Archaeological Park and, in addition to incredible landscapes formed by preserved vegetation, it has 32 ruins and 169 terraces carved into the mountains, cut by narrow streets and numerous circular squares.
Peru have one of the most impressive treks in South America, Salkantay is an alternative way to reach Machu Picchu. The route is 74 km long and can be covered in 5 days of walking. And don't think that the beauty of this trekking is only in its final destination. Along the way, adventurers pass through incredible scenery, between snow-capped mountains and green valleys with waterfalls and lakes.
But you have to be in good physical condition. In addition to the temperature variation, which goes from -5 ºC to 26 ºC, there is a great oscillation in altitude, from 1,600 meters above sea level to 4,650 meters. And, most importantly: even experienced travelers should do this trekking with the accompaniment of an expert guide.
The Huayhuash Trail is not only one of the most beautiful treks in South America, but in the world. This region of northern Peru is home to the highest concentration of snowy mountains above 5,400 meters and attracts the most experienced mountaineers. Unlike the Andes mountain range, Huayhuash is relatively small, with only 30 km from east to west and 20 km from north to south. However, it is beautiful and has impressive scenery in the midst of its imposing peaks – the largest, Yerupajá, is 6,617 meters high.
There are several paths to be followed in this region. The most famous is the Huayhuash Mountain Trekking, which makes a circular route around the mountain range, 130 km long. It starts at the Cuartelhuain camp and ends at the pueblo de Llamac.
Finally, the trekking that leads to the Chimborazo Volcano is one of the most beautiful in South America and also one of the most challenging due to the low temperatures. Chimborazo is 6310 meters above sea level and is considered the highest volcano in the world. There are two base cities for those going on this trekking: Riobamba and Ambato.
The trail entrance is 4386 meters above sea level and, as it is in a reserve, you need a permit to access it. There are two refuges, one at an altitude of 4,800 meters and the other at an altitude of 5,000 meters. Both have commercial establishments where it is possible to have meals and rest. But it is worth mentioning that, due to the low temperatures, it is important to bring enough clothing to do this trekking.
