San Andrés is an island in the Caribbean Sea that belongs to Colombia, but is close to Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Its location brings a cultural mix where Colombian identity prevails, but with touches of Creole culture.
The language spoken on the island, in addition to Spanish, is Creole, with English, African, French and Castilian influences.
The trip can be perfectly combined with other Colombian destinations, such as the city of Cartagena, which is just 1h30 by plane from San Andrés.
The architecture and charm of Cartagena combined with the tropical paradise that is San Andrés can be a perfect combo for honeymooners, traveling with friends, family or solo travelers.
It is also worth remembering that Colombia recently came out in two important rankings of the best countries to visit in 2022.
In San Andrés the heat is guaranteed all year round, with an average temperature of 28ºC. In summer the sensation is close to 40°C, in winter the days remain warm, but the nights are usually cooler, around 25°C.
From January to May it rains little in San Andrés, from June to November are the rainiest months, but with greater intensity between August and October. Hurricanes are rare, but there can be winds and storms.
However, in relation to the weather in San Andrés, nothing is 100% predictable, we went in the second half of November, we stayed for 10 days and the most that happened were quick showers, in a matter of minutes it was a beautiful sun. Always hot!
High season in San Andrés takes place during the holiday months (December, January, February, July and August) and long holidays such as Holy Week. April, May, September and October are the best for those looking to save money.
San Andrés is an incredible place, the right destination for those who like sun, beach, diving, tranquility or partying. I recommend at least 3 or 4 full days to do the main tours such as Johnny Cay, Acuario and Volta a Ilha.
However, to enjoy everything calmly, do other tours such as the underwater walk, the parasail flight, enjoy the central beach, the tax-free shops... stay longer! 5, 6, 7 days if you can.
When choosing where to stay in San Andrés, the preferred location for tourists is the center of the island, close to the popular Spratt Bight beach.
This area offers a better structure for restaurants, shops, it is the boarding point for boat trips and concentrates the largest offer of hotels, but there are also options on other beaches.
The island does not disappoint in terms of natural beauty: like the entire Caribbean, it delivers a sea of incredible colors that range from turquoise blue to emerald green, which is why the city has been nicknamed the owner of the “sea of seven colors”. In addition to pleasant temperatures, cool restaurants and a boardwalk typical of small beach towns, with many shops, ice cream parlors and cafes.
The city doesn't bring luxury and doesn't have the trendy resorts like Cancún. In San Andrés, the rustic – which reminds us of trips to the coast in adolescence – steals the show. Still, there are good options for accommodation and gastronomy.
The boom in European and North American visitors did not reach San Andrés as it does in other destinations. Good for us Latinos, who can visit the island at more affordable prices than other Caribbean beaches.
Nature, culture, cuisine, shopping or sightseeing, there are plenty of reasons to include San Andrés in your vacation itinerary.
