The Indians or natives call it Parekupa-meru, but tourists know it as Salto Ángel, the highest waterfall in the world, at 979 meters high, a true spectacle of nature. The stunning landscape is in 3 million hectares of preserved forest, in the middle of an incredible national park, in Venezuela. Next, discover a little more about this magical place in South America.
In Canaima National Park, Venezuela, is Salto Ángel, the most breathtaking waterfall in the world. The sixth largest national park on the planet is located in the state of Bolívar, in the municipality of Grande Sabada. The destination is 400 km from Boa Vista, capital of Roraima, 705 km from Santa Elena and 596 km from Puerto Ordaz, places with departures to the waterfall.
How to get
You will need transport by air, by water and by land. So, there are different ways to get to the biggest waterfall in the world. Tourists can take a road trip from the capital of Roraima, Boa Vista, to the city of Santa Elena de Uiarén.
Then you have to go to the airport and board a chartered flight to Canaima National Park. On this journey, which takes almost 5 hours, you will cross the Brazil-Venezuela border. Some people choose to take a flight from Puerto Ordaz with an additional 9 hours drive.
Another way is to go straight to Caracas and, from there, take a flight to the park. Finally, when in Canaima, it is necessary to travel approximately 4 hours by boat and 1h30 of walk to the base of the Salto Ángel waterfall. Phew, take a breath!
The rain is more frequent between May and December in Venezuela. Therefore, this is a great time to find the waterfall with a considerable volume of water, ideal for contemplation. In addition, due to the rainy season, the rivers are fuller, making it easier to get around by boat. During the dry season, the crossing may be impossible.
Many travel agencies also organize other tours through Canaima National Park. When navigating through Laguna Canaima, it is possible to reach Salto El Sapo, with the right to take a bath to cool off. In addition, the tourist will know and pass inside the Salto El Hacha, a waterfall with a path through a rustic staircase. In addition, the tepuis or tepuys, table-shaped rock formations, complement the incredible landscape. Finally, some hotels organize extra tours, such as the flight over Canaima.
This is not an ordinary trip, that is, it is for those who are willing to spend hours traveling, often without comfort. The small plane and the current of the river to cross by canoe can be scary. However, upon arriving at the final destination, the beauty is splendid.
The Angel Falls inspired the animation Up. Unlike the movie, travelers can't take their home there, but there are hotels that are perfect for a complete rest. So Have Fun!
