Two Pearls on the Caribbean Coast

Visiting Tayrona National Park and the area surrounding it is one of the highlights of any trip to Colombia. The nature is astonishing as the rainforest come from the mountains right down to the beaches. And the beaches have close to white sands and are framed with palm trees. Simply gorgeous!

There is a small number of very simple accommodation options within the national park, but most people stay in one of the hotels close by. I can recommend one of the rather luxurious hotels in Los Naranjos, for example Senda Cabaña Barlovento, or Villa Playa Tayrona, both located right at the beach with gorgeous views of the coast and/or the river. Or, alternatively and more rustically, but also beautiful Finca Los Angeles located directly at the Playa Los Angeles, which is located a 10 minutes walk away from Los Naranjos.

No matter where you stay, I can highly recommend to visit the beach in Los Naranjos. There is a river which flows into the sea right there - the views are astonishing as you can see-) Senda Cabaña Barlovento hotel has
a beautiful cool bar right when you walk down to the beach, where you can sip on a nice drink and enjoy the views!

Tayrona National Park itself is worth a trip as well. Be sure you arrive early (before 8am!) at the park entrance close by Los Naranjos to limit the time you have to wait in line. Once you made it through the line you start the hike through a beautiful rainforrest. There are three main beaches you pass if you do the entire hike. You need to plan to hike for about 3-3.5 hours until you reach the final beach. And the fist beach is about an hour closer. It is hot and humid, but there are places to get something to drink. But I recommend to bring at least some water and maybe some snacks as the only restaurant, which is always open, is located at the very last beach. During the hike you will have multiple beautiful places to take pictures and just enjoy the fantastic rain forrest and with all the sounds the forrest and the animals make in such an environment.

If you don't want to walk all the way back there is the option to ride back on a horseback, which we did:-) The horses can be booked on short notice at the last beach. The ride back will take about 1 to 1.15 hours and cost 50'000 COP per person/horse (Feb. 2022).

Even though the park is quite touristy, I can highly recommend a day trip. The rain forrest and the beaches are definitely worth the long hike. And the views are some of the best I saw in Columbia!
