Visit Curacao
Curacao is an island colonized by the Netherlands and one of the wonderful Caribbean destinations. The place is just 70km from Venezuela and is part of the Kingdom of Holland. Dutch is the main language of the island, but English, Spanish and especially Papiamento (a dialect that mixes several different languages - Portuguese, among them) are spoken locally. With only 150,000 inhabitants and an economy that is based on the oil refinery and tourism, the place stands out among the Caribbean islands for having a pleasant climate all year round and being out of the hurricane path.
Curacao is a country, but it could easily pass for a city, given its size. Despite being small, it is surprising how many attractions the place has. The beaches, beautiful and clean, are always the main target of those who visit the country, but there is much more to see and do.
Curacao is part of the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao) and stands out for its crystalline, deep blue and clear beaches, perfect for diving. Seeing Kenepa, a beach of perfect blue, similar to a swimming pool, is the certainty of being in paradise or very close to it.
The capital of Curacao, Willemstad, is divided into Otrobanda and Punda, and the connection between the two is a floating bridge capable of moving when there is a need for a vessel to pass through the bay to reach the port. Walking around the capital, especially Punda, is like discovering a little lost piece of Holland in the Caribbean. The architecture, a hallmark of the Netherlands, is one of Curaçao's charms, which does not hide its origins in its colorful walls.
KLM is one of the companies that fly to Curacao from Europe, and Jet Blue and American Airlines are options for those departing from the United States. Those who want to split the trip, partly in Aruba, partly in Curaçao, can take one of the flights of the small companies that fly in the Caribbean, such as Insel Air or Divi Divi Air.
Be aware that, when leaving the airport, you may have to pay a fee of US$ 39. Some airlines do not incorporate the boarding tax into the final price of the ticket and therefore the amount is charged upon return to the country of origin. .
To leave Hato Airport, the easiest way is to take a taxi to the hotel, however, renting a car and leaving the airport with it is an excellent option because this is the easiest way to get around the country. We recommend renting the car online and when disembarking look for the rental company where the service was contracted.
If your plan is to visit beaches, head to the west side of the island and visit Porto Mari, Kenepa Grandi and Cas Abao. If you have time in your itinerary, it's worth going to Klein Curacao too - the tour lasts all day and the way has strong waves, but the sea in little Klein is wonderful and makes up for the difficult journey!
If you want to do other tours, you can visit the Sea Aquarium, which has fish and other marine animals, or go to the Dolphin Academy, where you can do activities and take pictures of the dolphins. In addition to diving and snorkeling, which are classics, a different activity to see the bottom of the sea is Aquafari, in which you ride a kind of "motorcycle" in the sea! For the more adventurous, an alternative is to take an off-road buggy tour, which reveals less explored sides of the island!
Curacao is a Caribbean destination that is little affected by hurricanes in the Caribbean. You will be able to go to the country all year round without having to think about whether your travel date falls in the hurricane season or not.
Even with the changes of the seasons, the heat remains in the country, which has a high average annual temperature, around 28ºC. Thermometers easily pass 30ºC, guaranteeing a pleasant temperature of the sea. There is a constant breeze in the region, so it is recommended to bring, in addition to lots of light clothes, a coat for those who are more sensitive.
From December to March/April is high season; Due to the high demand for the place, prices rise a little and the offer of accommodation becomes scarcer. July and August are also months of intensified tourism, with few rainy days and very hot weather.
If you want to travel in the mid-season, bet on months like May, September and October, which are cheaper. Between October and January the rains are more frequent, but they occur mainly in the form of showers, without affecting a good sunny day at the beach.
Have fun!
