Declared the capital of Canada in 1867, Ottawa was chosen as the country's seat by Queen Victoria. The city is located at the confluence of three rivers and on the border between two major Canadian provinces-Ottawa is in the province of Ontario and a few meters across the Ottawa River is Gatineau, part of the Province of Quebec. Together, Ottawa and Gatineau form a metropolitan region with more than 1.2 million inhabitants, the fourth largest in the country.

Although Toronto is the largest city in Canada, the government capital is in Ottawa, which is why public service is the main activity for a good portion of the population, followed by the technology industry. Bilingual, multicultural and fun, Ottawa is a small and welcoming capital, with tree-lined parks and rivers that contrast with its Gothic architecture buildings, such as Parliament Hill, the Canadian parliament.

With a compact center, the city is inviting for cycling and walking, especially along the Rideau Canal and in the ByWard Market, a vibrant area with a market in the morning and many restaurants. The Rideau Canal is one of the many UNESCO heritage sites in Ottawa and is linked to the city of Kingston-it is frozen over during the winter and is considered the biggest skating rink in the world! For those who travel in this very cold season, the tip is to venture out on the skating rinks; for those who travel in the summer, it is worth taking the opportunity to sit by the canal and observe the view, especially at sunset.

As the capital, the city hosts national and international events and has museums and cultural attractions for anyone to miss. The Canadian War Museum has a huge collection related to wars in the world, in addition to tanks and an old plane; the Royal Canadian Mint produces collector coins, including gold; the Canadian Museum of History has rooms with collections of different themes and an area called the Children’s Museum, a must-see for children.

Ottawa is a city often forgotten in the itinerary of tourists who visit the country, mainly because many people consider that there is not much to do there. The capital isn't really big like other Canadian cities, but it's cute and great for walking, learning about the country's culture, enjoying the food and its festivals! For those who have time, it's worth including it in the script!

Ottawa is a small city, but it could easily compete with large cities in the world when it comes to museums. The Canadian capital has a huge number of museums and high quality collections, for those who enjoy this type of cultural attraction, the trip will be even more enjoyable. The cool thing is that, because there are many museums, they address completely different topics and appeal to people of different tastes as well. In several of them, admission is free on Thursdays, between 4 pm and 8 pm.

Among the city's main museums are the Canadian Museum of History, which deals with a variety of subjects, has permanent and temporary exhibitions and a huge area for children to play; the Canadian War Museum, whose exhibit tells the story of wars around the world and in Canada and has an exhibition featuring only vehicles used in warfare-including tanks and an airplane; and the National Gallery of Canada, a museum dedicated to the arts. The Royal Canadian Mint is not a museum, but it is well worth a visit-this is one of Canada's mints and produces commemorative coins, so in addition to knowing the manufacturing process, you can see coins with unusual figures.

Tip: The Museums Passport is a card that entitles you to visit 7 museums in Ottawa. For those who intend to visit several of them, the Museums Passport represents savings, as the card ($49) costs less than the entrance to each of the museums purchased separately. The card can be purchased at the city's information center or at participating museums, they are: Canada Agriculture Museum, Canada Aviation and Space Museum, Canadian Museum of History, Canadian Museum of Nature, Canadian War Museum, National Gallery of Canada, Royal Canadian Mint

Unlike other cities, choosing where to stay in Ottawa is not such a difficult task. The city is compact and its most important tourist attractions are concentrated in the central region, especially in Centretown, Lowertown/Byward Market. Walking in this region is easy; one reason to be well located is that you can do everything on foot and thus save time and money.

Another tip is to pay attention to the fact that, in Canada, tourism is stronger during the summer (June to September) and if you plan to travel during this period, be sure to book at the last minute. On important event dates, such as July 1 and the Winterlud winter festival, the city is usually packed.

Staying in Centretown, as the city center is known, a good option is to stay close to Parliament Hill and Sparks Street, a pedestrian street. In this region are the Ottawa Marriott Hotel, the Sheraton Ottawa Hotel and the Hotel Indigo Ottawa Downtown. To the west of downtown are the Radisson Hotel Ottawa and the Albert at Bay Suite Hotel. For a special experience, you can stay at Fairmont Château Laurier, a historic hotel, which has an exceptional location and unique architecture-it looks like a castle!

Another excellent area for accommodation, in our opinion, the best choice, is the ByWard Market area or its surroundings, such as the Sandy Hill district. The ByWard Market area has several restaurants, bars and shops, so it's a busy place, which has everything close by and still the ease of being on the centertown side. There are Courtyard by Marriott Downtown, Novotel Ottawa, Les Suites Hotel and for those who like hostels, the Hi - Ottawa Jail Hostel, which is housed in a former prison.

Accommodation in the city center is generally more expensive for the convenience of a good location. If the hotel options in the neighborhoods mentioned above don't fit your budget, try to stay further away from the center. An excellent idea is to stay in Gatineau, Ottawa's neighboring city, which has hotels close to tourist attractions, such as the Best Western Plus Gatineau-Ottawa or Four Points by Sheraton.
