Visit Amsterdam
A simple stroll through the streets of Amsterdam - or a bike ride, if you want to join the locals - and it is already possible to understand perfectly why the capital of the Netherlands is one of the most sought after destinations by tourists from all over the world.
Surrounded by canals, bridges and bike paths, full of old buildings (with huge windows that look like shop windows) and breathtaking landscapes, the city also has an intense cultural life. But the truth is that, despite all this activity, Amsterdam does not disappoint those who want a quiet or even romantic stay.
The vibrant city offers a number of cultural and entertainment options, such as some internationally famous museums, such as the Van Gogh and Rijsk, and well-structured parks, such as the Vondelpark.
The traditional bars that serve the famous Dutch beer are also everywhere, in addition to nightclubs, concert halls and restaurants with cuisine for all tastes. Of course, the Dutch people are extremely friendly, communicative and love to celebrate.
After all, what would be the correct term? A lot of people don't know, but Netherlands is the official denomination. The explanation for the second name is that there really was a province called Holland inserted in the region where the Netherlands are today.
This province emerged as a dominant power in the 17th century and that is why the name is so famous all over the world, including Brazil. Currently, the former Holland region corresponds to the provinces of South Holland and North Holland (where Amsterdam is).
The official language of the Netherlands is Dutch and the natives are happy when the visitor struggles to pronounce a few phrases like "Dank u wel" the same as "thank you very much".
However, increasingly inhabited by foreigners - currently there are more than 700 thousand - the English language is quite widespread in Amsterdam. In fact, Dutch people who speak fluently not only English, but also French, German, among other languages, are more common than you might think.
Tolerance and practicality are intrinsic qualities of the city that, despite its 737 years of existence, exudes modernity. Proof of this is the Red Light district, the famous Red Light District, where prostitutes exposed inside shop windows offer their services legally.
In coffeeshops, most of them concentrated in the historic center region, it is possible to consume drugs considered light. The use of some substances has been legal in the country since 1976, but in recent times the Dutch government has been studying tightening the rules for selling them to tourists.
With so many options, take at least three days to explore the city and you will be enchanted by such beauty.
Amsterdam offers an extensive list of activities to do during the day. There are museums, squares, parks and bike paths that are highly inviting for a bike ride, in addition, the city has no less than 160 canals and more than a thousand bridges, making the boat ride one of the mandatory tourist programs.
But despite being the city of bicycles, the capital of the Netherlands is also extremely inviting for walking. For those who love hiking, there is nothing better than putting on comfortable shoes - tennis shoes, preferably - and enjoying a series of routes filled with beautiful landscapes. Just be very careful with the bike lane area (generally, lanes parallel to the pedestrian crossing).
Riekermolen is one of the windmills that make up Amsterdam's landscape. Situated on the banks of the River Amstel, the 1636 drainage mill is in a green area of the Amstelpark, adjacent to a statue of Rembrandt, a tribute to the drawings the painter made in the area.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to see the mill from the inside, but the external scenery is worth the visit and also some photos. Remembering that on Saturdays and Sundays, from noon to 5 pm (May to September), it is possible to see Riekermolen working.
One of the tips is to go there by bike and enjoy the tour of the area.
A great tip for those who will have a short stay and also for visitors who intend to spend more time, as they will be able to get to know the city from other angles. In addition to the famous bridges, canals and beautiful landscapes, during the boat ride it is possible to see the famous floating houses up close.
The basic tour lasts, on average, 1 hour and covers the main tourist spots. Some companies offer a dinner cruise, that is, a special dinner served on board. Companies like Blue Boat and Holland International are in high demand. Regular tours cost an average of €15 (adult) and €7 (children up to 12 years old). Dinners on board are available from €59 (adults) and €40 (children up to 12 years old), with everything included.
Accommodation options will not be lacking in Amsterdam. During a short walk through the city center it is possible to notice the huge number of hotels and hostels that fit the most diverse profiles and pockets. A good tip for those who want to save money is to book the place as soon as possible. During the summer, which begins in June, the city is usually quite crowded and cheap stays are scarcer.
Amsterdam not only offers one ideal neighborhood to stay in, but several. Joordan, for example, is probably the most famous neighborhood in the city, full of canals, little streets, cafes and restaurants of all kinds - ideal for those who want to experience this most charming side of the city.
The region close to the Central Train Station is also home to a good number of options, many of them belonging to the major networks. But if the intention is to stay close to the night bustle of the city, the ideal regions are Leidse, Rembrandt and Dam squares.
Before making the reservation, be aware and inform yourself a lot about the place, see if the establishment is suitable for your needs. Installed in old Dutch residences, some hotels do not have an elevator, which would be a big inconvenience for guests with limited mobility or with a huge amount of luggage. Rooms overlooking the canals tend to be more expensive, but they are an excellent option for those who want to enjoy the city at all times.
Have fun!
