Visit Washington
While politicians discuss the country's course on Capitol Hill, thousands of tourists stroll carefree through the gardens of the National Mall. Oblivious to the White House's tight security, cyclists cycle among images of Presidents Lincoln, Roosevelt and Thomas Jefferson. Amidst the artwork in the Sculpture Garden, musicians play jazz for barefoot visitors who cool off in the garden's fountain. Under the cherry blossoms, couples relax having picnics, at the same time, children run among dinosaurs, “monets” and space capsules through the city's numerous museums.
The scenery hardly resembles the most important political, economic and military center in the world. Washington, DC had everything to be a bureaucratic capital. It could limit itself to the role of city of power and experience only the emotion of signing major agreements. However, the capital of the United States went much further and conquered tourists from all over the world. The welcoming way in which he welcomes visitors is capable of knocking down even the most skeptical traveller. It's hard not to be enchanted by the huge range of activities offered there. And, by the way, the overwhelming majority with free admission.
Founded in the 1800s, Washington is fully planned, low-rise and heavily tree-lined. It is easy to be enchanted by a 3 km esplanade, called among the locals only by The Mall: every 100 meters there is a beautiful monument, memorial or museum with a spectacular collection. In addition, there is practically no need to use transport (although they are very efficient). Feet or bicycles are enough to get us almost everywhere. And when we talk about everywhere we can include the important public buildings, always open to visitors. Washington manages to turn civic and highly patriotic tourism into incredible outings, even when it comes to war memorials, where honors go to victims and combatants.
The city, although light, is political even in its name, chosen in honor of the first US president. The District of Columbia, of which Washington is a part, refers to the discoverer of the Americas, Christopher Columbus. And that's how many residents treat the capital of the United States, just by the acronym DC. The relationship between the capital and the district can seem complicated, as Washington does not belong to any state.
It is worth remembering that the capital Washington, DC, located on the East Coast, is different from the state of Washington, in the northwest of the country.
For those who think that the city only offers tourism linked to the attributions of a capital, get ready for beautiful surprises. Washington is full of charming sights, such as Georgetown and Old Town Alexandria; a huge variety of malls and outlets; restaurants that go around the world with their elaborate menus; and an intense cultural life.
Washington is a very easy city to explore. Everything is prepared so that visitors feel comfortable visiting each tourist spot. The main attractions of the city are beautiful and worth every step to visit all of them. And we speak of "step" in the literal sense. The path that connects them all is one of the most beautiful and pleasant walks.
The proximity to almost all tourist attractions helps a lot in the life of those who are in the city. The biggest concentration of attractions is on the National Mall, the 3km garden that connects the Washington Monument to the Capitol. Add to it the surrounding areas of West Potomac Park and Constitution Gardens, where the Lincoln Memorial is located, and you have a wonderful itinerary. Spending the day walking around public buildings, monuments and memorials can seem, at first glance, to be a boring program. Big mistake! Get ready for a marathon that unites history, architecture and beautiful landscapes.
Walking along the National Mall is the best way to see the monuments and memorials. Along the way you will easily find them all. The spaces are outdoors and open to visitors 24 hours a day. Most monuments commemorate war victims, soldiers who fought for the US and US presidents. An important exception is the activist Martin Luther King Jr., honored for his importance in the struggle for civil rights for black Americans. The main attractions on the National Mall are:
Lincoln Memorial - Tribute to the president who led the country during the American Civil War.
Washington Monument - Homage to the first US President.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial - Tribute to the president who led the country during the great depression and later in the period of World War II.
Thomas Jefferson Memorial - Homage to the president who was one of the authors of the Declaration of Independence.
Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial - Tribute to the activist who fought for the civil rights of black Americans.
Korean War Veterans Memorial - Tribute to Korean War fighters.
Vietnam Veterans Memorial - Tribute to those who fought during the Vietnam War.
World War II Memorial - Tribute to the 16 million people who served during World War II.
Still on the National Mall route, you can visit some important public buildings. Chief among them is the Capitol. The place where the American Congress works receives tourists for guided tours. In the script is the Rotunda room. The large dome marks the shape of the building, one of the most famous images of the city. In addition, it is possible to visit the National Library, the library with the largest collection in the world; the National Archive, home to the American Constitution and Bill of Rights; and, just a few minutes' walk away, the White House, the official residence of the American president.
Outside the National Mall area you will find other monuments and buildings worth visiting. The Pentagon 9/11 Memorial in Arlington commemorates the victims of the Pentagon bombing on the same date as the World Trade Center bombing, while the US Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima) commemorates Marines killed in action. In the same city, at Arlington National Cemetery, former war fighters and personalities such as President John Kennedy are buried. Still on the presidential line, Mount Vernon, the home where President George Washington lived, is open to visitors. And if you want to follow the places that marked history, Ford's Theater is the historic Theater where President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated.
Few cities in the world concentrate as many attractions in the same region as Washington DC. This feature makes it very easy to know where to stay in the capital of the United States. Keep in mind that the main focus for anyone visiting the area, especially first-time visitors, is the National Mall. And the closer to there, the better located you will be.
The long esplanade, between the Lincoln Memorial and the Capitol, is the main focus of Washington's sights. There are almost 4km filled with museums, important public buildings, memorials and monuments. Not to mention the surroundings, also full of attractions and good restaurants. So start your search for hotels that have easy access to this region. Between the Potomac River and First Street North East (behind the Capitol) you are in a great location!
The closer to the National Mall, Capitol Hill (surroundings of the Capitol) and Downtown (where the White House is), the more expensive the hotel will be. And the prices there are pretty steep. Therefore, evaluate the cost-benefit ratio. If the price of staying in a place that allows you to walk to the center weighs on your pocket, give priority to hotels that are close to the subway. By the way, this rule applies to any hotel in Washington DC. With the efficient public transport system you won't need a car and will easily reach all tourist attractions.
In addition to these three regions, you can choose from less popular but well located areas, such as: Dupont Circle, Foggy Botton, Embassy Row and Georgetown (the last two are beautiful, but don't offer a subway).
Have fun!
