Visit Easter Island
Mysteries, stories, natural beauties and endless discoveries: Easter Island, found by Europeans on an Easter Sunday, is a simply unique destination. Considered one of the most isolated islands in the world, Rapa Nui Island - as it is called in the native language - is located in Polynesia, 3700km from Chile, the country to which it belongs.
The place is known for the giant moai scattered around the island, statues carved in stone, built in worship of the ancestors. For many people, the existence of "giant heads", which actually have a body and even hair, is an absolute unknown; for anyone visiting Easter Island, however, the grandeur of a people who, with little technology, were able to build such impressive works that they will never go out of history is clear.
The island of volcanic origin is ideal to escape the fast pace of the city and enjoy beautiful landscapes. There are those who think that the moai are the only attractions of Easter, but that thought could not be more wrong. The moai are indeed the symbol of the place and the main attraction; beyond them, however, volcanoes, parks, beaches and restaurants form an unmissable combination for the curious and travelers of all kinds.
Hanga Roa is the base of the island, where restaurants, shops, local residents, hotels and other services are concentrated. Among the must-see tours to include in your itinerary are: sunrise at Ahu Tongariki; Rano Raraku, the moai factory; Orongo, where the birdman ritual took place; a hike on the slopes of the beautiful Rano Kau volcano; and of course the traditional Tahai sunset. If the heat gets too hot, there's nothing better than going to Anakena, enjoying a beach and, on top of that, seeing more moai.
Although Easter Island, perched in the Pacific Ocean, is an incredible destination, a trip to the place requires cost planning. Hotels and restaurants are priced well above average and not budget-friendly, but the general consensus is that Rapa Nui and its people are so interesting that they're worth the effort.
Magical, fascinating and unique. Easter Island is a place to forget cell phones and traffic noise, and make room for an ancient culture, which, despite the difficulties, managed to survive to the present day.
Beaches, volcanoes, moai, caves, hikes with beautiful landscapes, restaurants and shows - there is no shortage of attractions on Easter Island, you just need to have enough energy to get to know them all. Many people say that the island is small and that two days are enough to get to know it, and the point of view is still true; we recommend, however, four days at the destination to see everything calmly and make the time spent inside the plane worth it.
The first place we recommend visiting is the Anthropological Museum. The location is actually not as interesting as the moai, but it is well worth it for the content written on the panels. Knowing the events and history of Easter is essential to understand the island's sights without spending too much.
As there are many attractions, try to select them according to your time. Among the most important places that you should not miss, include: Orongo and Rano Raraku, the only two attractions that require a ticket; Ahu Tongariki, Anakena, Rano Kau and the Ahu Tahai - the best place to end the afternoon. To go beyond the basic package, go to Ahu Akivi, Ahu Vaihu, Akahanga and Ana Kai Tangata.
When night comes, don't think the day is over. Allow yourself to have a good dinner, with seafood and fresh fish and, if you still have the courage, go to one of the dance shows that the place offers, because it's worth it!
Undoubtedly, the main attraction of the island are the moai, statues built in worship of the ancestors and the chiefs of the tribes that lived there. The moai were carved into the slopes of the Rano Raraku volcano, where today there is an incredible park that we call the "moai factory". Once built, the moai were transported to platforms (ahu) and positioned facing the interior of the island in order to protect the people.
Today, most of the moai on Easter Island are felled. The cause of the toppling of the statues is possibly due to internal wars between tribes and the subsequent lack of belief in what the moai represented. As a result, only about 50 moai are left standing, thanks to restoration work done over the past few decades. The platforms that you should not miss are: Ahu Tongariki, with 15 standing moai, where you can see the most beautiful sunrise on the island; Ahu Nau Nau, which is next to Playa Anakena; Ahu Akivi, where the only moai are said to be facing the horizon; and Ahu Vai Uri (Tahai), with the best Easter sunsets.
In addition to the stone statues, be sure to admire the natural landscapes, including the inactive volcanoes Rano Raraku and Rano Kau, with a simply spectacular view. Orongo and Rano Raraku are equally important parks and must-see sights; therefore, they are the only ones where entry is paid. If in Rano Raraku you can see countless moai in different sizes, positions and states of composition, Orongo is the place to admire the look and understand a tradition created after the fall of the moai, the birdman ceremony, when a tribe was entrusted to "manage" the island.
Hanga Roa is the island's village that concentrates commerce, restaurants, hotels and inns, however some hotels are 15 or 20 minutes walk from the main commerce, not favoring the life of those who are on foot.
For those who do not plan to rent a vehicle, the ideal is to stay close to the main street of Hanga Roa (Atanu Tekena) and Av. Te Pito Ote Henua (from the beach to the church); those who rent a car or motorbike can easily choose any place on the island to stay. See our map on the left side of the page to better understand the geography of the village.
Accommodation prices in Easter are above the normal value and, in most cases, accommodations offer a lower quality than the amount paid. It is not uncommon to find inns or hotels without television, with average beds and poor breakfast. There are accommodations of different styles (hotels, inns and hostels), but - with the exception of expensive accommodations like Explora and HangaRoa Hotel - the accommodations are simple and rustic, as is everything on the island. Be wary of very low values under the risk of finding rooms in poor condition.
Some good value for money accommodation suggestions are the Tupa Hotel - which is close to the main street, the Rapa Nui and the Taha Tai.
Have fun!
