Pucón is a city located 780km south of Santiago and has just over 30,000 inhabitants. The small Chilean refuge is located in the Región de la Araucanía and is one of the main tourist destinations in the country. Tourism is an important source of local income and, although the city is small in size, it offers an excellent structure for its visitors.

And what makes Pucón such an interesting place? A lot, actually, starting with nature. The city is in a privileged region, with many araucaria trees, crystal clear lakes, waterfalls, mountains, hot springs and, of course, volcanoes. Pucón is in an area with many volcanoes, including the Villarrica Volcano, at the foot of the city. Villarrica is an active volcano, with an altitude of around 2,800m and whose summit is covered by snow all year round. Reaching the highest point of this volcano is the goal of most of those who visit Pucón and an exercise in overcoming, as the ascent is steep and not easy!

With so many natural resources and so many native beauties, ecotourism is the strong point of the region. In Pucón you can start the day sunbathing on a freshwater beach, spend the afternoon rafting or tree climbing and, at night, relax in a thermal pool. Adventuring, overcoming limits and being open to new activities is a mantra around here. There are so many different activities that it really surprises how such a small place is able to provide so much adventure.

For those who like to walk, it is essential to include a whole day dedicated to the Huerquehue National Park. Walking along a steep trail, which rises 600m, you reach lakes suspended with incredible waters. It's hard to believe the location of the lakes, but the climb and effort to reach them are worth it. For a lighter trail, the tip is to go to Salto El Claro, a waterfall with about 80m; and if you don't want to make almost any effort and see such beautiful beauties, visit the Ojos de Caburgua, a place with unique waterfalls.

The hikes, ascents and descents require effort, but don't think that Pucón is purely physical. Nearby the city are the Geometric Baths, pools of naturally hot water that have temperatures between 35º and 45ºC - the natural scenery around is stunning, a trip to remember for a lifetime.

In addition to nature, Pucón has a good hotel structure, capable of pleasing the most economical backpackers to the most refined in need of comfort and rest. For those who want to rest, renting a cabin in the middle of nature is a great choice. The cuisine, by the way, leaves nothing to be desired; nobody goes hungry in Pucón. The city has great restaurants, whether you want to eat pasta, meat, fish or try contemporary cuisine.

For those who have never heard of the place, the city has a real surprise in store for the amount of attractions it offers, for those who have already heard about it and are eagerly awaiting the moment to discover it, only we can confirm, "yes, Pucón really is everything that say".

For those who have never heard of the city, Pucón may not seem attractive at first; however, although small, it reserves many beautiful places to be seen, several walks to be taken in its surroundings, as well as outdoor activities. Some tours can be done on their own, others must be booked with tour companies.

Summer is better to do some tours in the city, but that doesn't mean you can't do them in winter, you can, but you have to take into account that the weather will be much colder and outdoor or water activities require a little courage.

The main attraction of the city is, without a doubt, the Villarrica Volcano. Its summit is at an altitude of about 2800m and can be seen from several points in the region. Snow remains in the upper part of the volcano throughout the year, but, of course, it is more in winter, when the volcano also works as a ski resort. The arduous climb to the volcano is what brings many travelers to the city and can be done all year round -- in the summer it's easier, as the amount of snow is less and the possibility of getting a day of open weather is greater.

As the ascent is quite steep and the volcano is very high, it is only made in favorable weather conditions, with open weather and little wind. If you are adept at adventures and feel in physical conditions that allow for the ascent, be sure to do it. This tour can only be done with agencies and the time to complete it depends a lot on the time of year, but one thing is for sure: it is not easy to climb to the top, so the feeling of triumph is general among those who do it all. .

In Pucón, take time to visit Playa Grande, a freshwater, black "sand" beach that is packed with people in the summer, and also to take a boat trip on Lake Villarrica. In Cabúrgua, a neighboring village to Pucón, discover Lake Cabúrgua, which has another equally beautiful beach with crystal clear waters! If you don't feel too cold, it's worth a dip in the summer. A simple and super beautiful tour is Ojos de Caburgua, a place with waterfalls and incredible blue water to admire.

If you are willing to walk, trekking in Huerquehue Park is a good option. On the basic route that leads to the lakes (it is about 14km, with 10km of intermediate level trekking) the 600m climb is steep and tiring, but there are waterfalls along the way and the view from up there is breathtaking, no just for the landscape below, but because on top of the hill are incredibly beautiful lakes. Incidentally, waterfalls are also present in Pucón and one of the most beautiful to visit is Salto El Claro, with about 80m of fall. For those who like sports, there is also the possibility of canopying, tree climbing and trekking, one of the coolest activities there.

When you get that urge to relax from all the activities that Pucón has to offer, the best idea is to visit the region's hot springs. The Geometric Baths are the most famous and really are sensational; they are hot springs naturally, which are located between two hills -- between these hills runs the water of a waterfall and at the same time there are pools with temperatures that vary between 35 and 45°C, the landscape is beautiful and the experience is very relaxing . Other cool hot springs are Los Pozones, good to visit at night.

Pucón has accommodations that appeal to different audiences; it ranges from luxurious hotels, which operate in an all-inclusive mode, to cabins in the middle of nature and hostels with shared rooms. The best option for accommodation will be the one that fits in your pocket and fits your travel plans.

Something to keep in mind when booking accommodation is location -- think that booking accommodation and choosing your hotel are linked to how you intend to get around Pucón. If you want to rent a car, the location will not be so important, but if you want to do everything on foot and have easy access to shops, the ideal is to book a hotel in the center.

Pucón is a small town, with just over 35,000 inhabitants. Its main road is Av. O'higgins, which concentrates much of the commerce, on Calle Fresia are many of the restaurants you should visit during your trip. There are several hotels in the center, others are further away, there are hotels along Lake Villarrica and on rural properties, which offer more peace and, often, more beautiful landscapes than those found in urban areas.

In general, the accommodations are simple, many are rustic, following the style of architecture of the city. Keep an eye out if the hotel you are booking has a water heater and the environment, which make all the difference during a winter trip.

In the center of Pucón, the Hotel Gudenschwager, one of the oldest in the city, is a good option for those looking for a bed & breakfast. The place is very simple, but we feel at home! Other alternatives for those who want to stay in the center are the Vientos del Sur hotels and the beautiful Aldea Naukana.

Further away from the downtown area and close to the lake are the Hotel Boutique CasaEstablo and the Magma Lodge Hotel Boutique, which has cabins facing the lake. Those who have a looser budget and want to spend more on a very comfortable hotel can consider staying at the beautiful Antumalal or the Hotel Vira Vira, a recently opened hotel that has spacious rooms and works as an all-inclusive, with exceptional meals!
