Salar de Uyuni is known as the largest salt flat in the world. Located in southwest Bolivia, close to cities such as Uyuni and Potosí, it is about 12,000 km² in length and is at an altitude of 3,600 m. This salt flat was formed in a slow process; thousands of years ago there were lakes in this region, the water from the lakes then evaporated and resulted in the desert landscape you see today.

The landscape of the place is incredible, it is like a white sea as far as our vision can reach. The white of the floor is so strong that without sunglasses it is even difficult to see. Most of the year the Salar is completely dry, however, in the rainy season (summer), you may be lucky to find it flooded... if that happens, get ready to admire an unforgettable spectacle. Flooded, the desert is like a mirror, it reflects the sky, clouds and even the stars at night.

A walk to the Salar allows you to discover landscapes so beautiful that it is even difficult to believe they exist. What not everyone knows is that, in fact, when you say you are going to visit the Salar de Uyuni, you are usually going to take a tour that covers several stops, and only one of them is the Salar itself. This is one of the most famous tourist routes not only in Bolivia, but also in South America. It lasts up to 4 days and runs from the city of Uyuni, in Bolivia, to San Pedro de Atacama, in northern Chile, passing through several beautiful places.

Along the approximately 500 km route between San Pedro de Atacama and Uyuni, the landscapes are distinct and always surprising. We come across crystal clear lakes, fully functioning geysers, a huge lagoon with reddish waters, mountains, volcanoes, stone sculptures carved by the wind, wild animals and scenery that looks like an oasis in the middle of the desert.

Several tourist agencies offer the tour of the Salar de Uyuni both starting in Chile and Bolivia. The traditional tour is done in traction cars, shared with different people and has a capacity for 6 visitors and a driver. During the trip, the driver is, in addition to driving the vehicle, a cook, guide, mechanic and anything else that needs require.

The tour is, unquestionably, beautiful and impressive for its scenery; but it has several points that can count as negative and need to be considered. It is a tiring tour, in which you stay in simple accommodations, which are not always comfortable or very well sanitized. Food can be lacking, rooms must be shared with others and hot baths can be a luxury item.

Salar de Uyuni is a place of undeniable beauty and breathtaking landscapes. Do you want to know one of the most beautiful and surprising places in the world? This is the ideal choice!

The tour to Salar de Uyuni passes through places with altitudes that are always above 4,000 meters, which means that even in summer you can face a bit of cold, especially in the early morning and during the night.

In winter, temperatures are rigorous and, in summer, hotter, getting hot at certain times of the day. In the city of Uyuni, which gives its name to the salt flat, the average annual temperature is -6ºC; in winter the averages are around -12ºC and, in summer, around 1ºC. Such low averages can be a little scary, so travel equipped with cold weather clothes that protect from the wind. The most extreme temperatures are felt when the sun is not present, during the day temperatures are better, so the tip of dressing in layers and taking off or putting on clothes as you feel hot or cold is applicable here.

Winter is the dry season, very cold, when you will see the mountains and volcanoes along the tour covered by snow. In winter, as the salt flats are very dry, geometric figures form in the salt. Summer, on the other hand, is the rainy season, when the cold is not so latent and it is hot - traveling in this period, the great expectation is to find the Salar de Uyuni flooded. Thus, the salt desert is covered by a layer of water, something very similar to a mirror that reflects the sky.

Please note, however, that depending on the amount of water in the salar, the route of your tour may change and it may not be possible to cross it with your vehicle. Therefore, it is said that a good time to travel is after the rainy season, at the end of summer. Snow, ice and rain may require a change to the itinerary, for the safety of travelers.
