In the extreme south of the Americas is one of the wildest places on the planet. An almost untouched landscape awaits to be discovered and explored. This is the feeling of travelers arriving in Patagonia and Torres del Paine Park: they feel they are the only inhabitants of a universe full of mountains, glaciers, lakes and fields. The challenging natural immensity dazzles every type of adventurer.

To the south of the Andes, divided between Argentina and Chile, the Patagonian region covers a third of the territory of both countries. There are almost 800 thousand km² of impressive landscapes and rich nature. An environment almost uninhabited by men, but full of life.

The southern portion of Patagonia is one of the best spots for tourists who want a lot of adventure, but with little displacement. Between the city of Puerto Natales and the Torres del Paine National Park, it is possible to go climbing, trekking, kayaking, hiking, bird watching, horseback riding, visiting glaciers, city tours and museums. Not to mention the excellent gastronomic experience that the region offers.

The radical landscape, at first glance, may seem uninviting to those who are not used to adventure tourism. But Patagonia is so diverse that it absorbs all types of travelers. The tours will have the degree of difficulty you wish. The important thing is to keep in mind that any of them will leave memories for a lifetime.

This guide is specific to the Torres del Paine National Park region. So get a coat, hat and comfortable shoes. The walk will be long. Don't forget your camera and enjoy every second to capture your best memories.

It is true that every tourist who arrives in the Patagonian lands has as main objective to challenge the almost 3 thousand meters of the Torres del Paine; whether on a van tour, in a few hours of trail or during a nine-day trekking, the sensation of awe is the same. The W-shaped mountain range appears between the clouds, high in the valleys, at the bottom of the lake landscape, like a ubiquitous piece of land. From anywhere in the park it is possible to make a beautiful portrait of the imposing granite formation. Wait for the most beautiful light or walk around until you find a beautiful frame of branches to complete the photo. The Towers will accompany you wherever you go, even if bad weather sometimes hides them; in this case, there is no reason to worry, as other beauties make up this unexplored immensity.

Declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1978, Torres del Paine National Park, located 150km from Puerto Natales, remains one of the best protected areas on the planet. It is the dream destination of any eco-adventurer looking for everything in one place. The sparse population - less than one inhabitant per km² - helps to maintain the region's aura of isolation and leads the traveler to the feeling of being the discoverer of those lands.

To enjoy everything the park has to offer, visitors have all kinds of tours. It is possible to take a quick tour by van that takes you to the main points. The beautiful photos are guaranteed, but the emotion is not complete and the rush is great. Good for those who have little time.

If you have more time, allow at least three days for this scenario. One-day treks allow you to go beyond beautiful images; you will feel part of the landscape. During the tour, it is common to see animals such as guanacos, foxes, nandus, hares and condors, in addition to having time to contemplate the rich flora of the region; if you're lucky, you might see a cougar. It will be less rushed and more profitable. The guides, already experienced, count on time for photos and stops for observation. They know it's almost impossible to store the camera.

The day tour can follow itineraries such as the Blue Lagoon, the base of Torres, Valle do Francés, Gray Glacier, viewpoint and cascade del Paine, in addition to kayaking and small climbs. As if the view weren't enough, the guides offer freshly prepared meals, such as picnics on the edge of mountains, lakes or caves. You will have a full day of adventure, without losing the comfort of staying overnight in an excellent hotel. The next day, just choose another route.

If the intention is to be immersed in such natural wealth, there is no way to escape the long trails. The park offers all the support for the adventurer who will stay there for several days. Refugees, campsites and small inns are located at strategic points to make life easier for the traveler. Even with well-signposted paths, a guide is recommended for the region. Sudden variations in time may cause some unexpected problem.

The most famous circuit through the Torres del Paine is called the W. The name refers to the shape of the summits of the mountain range. There are five days and four nights totally dedicated to trekking and nature observation. The route starts at Lake Pehoe, following the Gray River (eight hours of journey), until reaching the glacier, from where you can observe an icy landscape of dazzling blue (another eight hours of journey). A few hours of walking and the traveler will be in Valle do Francés (nine hours of journey). The union of mountains, lake, forests and avalanches is complete with the view of the west face of the summits. One more day takes you to the base of the towers (an eight-hour journey), which will be explored on the last day, with a picnic with a view of the immensity of the mountain range. It will be five intense days, rewarded by the final landscape.

Southern Patagonia offers a wide variety of accommodations for adventure seekers. The hotels range from the most high-end luxury to the simplest camping trip. The view can vary between lakes, mountains, open fields and even the Torres del Paine. The hotels operate both on a full board and bed and brakfast system. Therefore, it depends a lot on what guests want to spend their moments of rest.

Puerto Natales, the closest city to Torres del Paine Park - 150km away -, offers good accommodation options. For those who want to enjoy the night, do some shopping or meet the local population, this is the best option. In Puerto Natales there is a wide range of travel agencies that offer tours to the region. Some more upscale hotels are not located in the urban area, but are just a few minutes away by car.

Another location option is the Torres del Paine Park area. The hotels are more exclusive and close to the main attractions. There is no waste of time to go to the park, and the region is quieter than the city, but it is difficult to go to Puerto Natales at night. Nothing that takes away from the charm of staying close to the famous towers of Chile.

The more daring ones, or those who will hike several days in the park, can stay in refuges and campsites strategically located in the support points of Torres del Paine National Park.
