Visit Puerto Varas
Stunning natural beauties, mild climate, good restaurants and all the tranquility that vacations deserve; Puerto Varas is like that. The Chilean city has around 40,000 inhabitants and is located in the Andean lakes region of northern Patagonia, an area where many German immigrants settled in the mid-19th century.
The city, which is one of the main tourist destinations in Chile and stands out for its crystal-clear lakes. Lake Llanquihue, which borders Puerto Varas, is the second largest in the country and not only offers beautiful landscapes; is an important source of income for residents due to fishing.
It is enough to arrive in the city on a sunny day to understand what these beauties are so much talked about. In addition to the lakes, the region also has hills, fresh air, abundant vegetation and some volcanoes - among them Osorno, which, together with Lake Llanquihue, offers a unique landscape. The same volcano works as a ski resort during the winter season and from up there it offers an incredible view - it is a tour that cannot be missed in any itinerary.
To see the color of the Andean waters up close, another must-see is the one that takes you to the Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park, where the falls of the Petrohué River are located, which, with their turquoise-colored waterfalls, leave even the most experienced people impressed by the natural set. If you can, it is also worth going to Peulla, a quiet and bucolic village, accessible by sailing on the equally beautiful Lake Todos Los Santos.
A trip to Puerto Varas is not just about nature. With a diverse hotel chain, good restaurants and an interesting recent history, the place is ideal for those who want to take a romantic trip in winter, or for those who prefer outdoor activities in summer. If you can enjoy the snow in winter, summer is ideal for enjoying the sunshine, walking on the lake shores, boating or cycling.
If hunger strikes, nothing to worry about. Salmon from the lake, seafood and centella (giant crabs taken from the waters of the Pacific) are on the menus of the most diverse restaurants. Eating well is not a difficult task there.
Beautiful scenery and good cuisine, accompanied by people who welcome you with open arms: Chile is a charming country and, if you want to enjoy a little bit of the Patagonian region, Puerto Varas is the right choice!
Puerto Varas is a city of natural and historical attractions. The beauty of the Chilean Lakes Region is what draws the most attention, it is true, but the charm that the German colonization and its constructions brought to the place is undeniable.
To start your program, we recommend taking a walk along the shores of Lake Llanquihue, the second largest lake in Chile and a major producer of salmon. When the weather is clear, it is possible to see the Osorno Volcano and Cabulco from the lake itself. After visiting the Llanquihue, a landmark in the city, take the opportunity to take a tour on foot or by bike and discover old mansions with typical architecture from the colonization period.
Osorno Volcano, which works as a ski resort during the winter, is open throughout the year and offers not only the opportunity to see snow, but also incredible landscapes, especially from its upper part - you can't miss the cable car ascent.
To be surprised by the color of the waters of the Andean lakes, which are so successful, be sure to go to the Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park, where the Saltos de Petrohué (waterfalls simply spectacular and with a contagious color) are located. Our tip is to visit both Osorno Volcano and Petrohué Falls on a day with few clouds, so that the sun makes the spectacle even more surprising.
For those who like museums and find it a bit tedious to read all the time, we recommend the Pablo Fierro Museum, which brings together antiques and paintings by the artist that bears the museum's name. Another very interesting one located in Frutillar is the German Colonial Museum, which realistically shows a little of the life of the German settlers who founded the city. This museum has a lot of green area, houses of German architecture, instruments used by settlers, among other things, it's super cool.
Puerto Varas may be a small town, but its hotel structure is top notch. The place offers hotels with every level of comfort and the best thing is that the daily prices are pretty cool, even in hotels with more perks. Summer is the time of greatest demand for accommodation and higher prices; if your trip is during this period, be sure to book in advance.
The center is the busiest area of the city, where banks, shops and most hotels are concentrated. Staying in and around the center is ideal for those who don't have a car and want easy access to transport. In our opinion, it is the best area to stay, because it allows you to walk to many places, in addition to being close to all the shops. If possible, stay in a hotel overlooking Lake Llanquihue, which makes your stay even more special.
To stay in the hustle and bustle, you can stay at the Gran Colonos del Sur; if you want to stay in the central region and still enjoy tranquility, other alternatives are Cabaña del Lago and Cumbres Puerto Varas, both overlooking the lake. For budget accommodation, the Weisserhaus does its job well and has attentive staff.
Some other hotels are located along the Costanera, the road that borders the lake. Staying in this area can also yield a beautiful view, but it is more recommended for those who are driving.
Puerto Montt, the main city in the region, has several hotels, usually with lower prices, but it is not that interesting to stay. Puerto Montt is not as beautiful as Puerto Varas, nor does it offer as many tourist attractions. If you decide to stay in Puerto Montt, consider renting a car for more comfort.
The Holiday Inn and the Manquehue are two suggestions for those opting for a hotel in Puerto Montt.
Remember to seek the opinion of former guests of the hotels you are interested in and to check if the service of the establishments is good. Staying in a hotel with good heating is important, as it is quite cold in the Lake District.
Have fun!
