Visit Bruges
Canals, cobblestone streets full of medieval buildings and incredible monuments, carriages circling from one side to the other and an aroma of chocolate and freshly made waffles, which leaves you kind of mesmerized. This is Bruges, the beautiful and photogenic capital of the province of West Flanders, in northeast Belgium.
On account of all the above, among other qualities, Bruges is considered by many as a city of fairy tales; of those small destinations that are easy to explore on foot, so much so that many people end up opting for the day trip, by train, from cities like Brussels, 90 km away, and to Amsterdam, about 250 km away.
However, the charming city of almost 20,000 inhabitants — a major industrial and commercial center in the 13th century — deserves much more than a day trip. In our opinion, the ideal is to spend at least one night in this recognized UNESCO heritage site, where sights such as the Grote Markt, the main square where the Belfry is located, and Burg square, become even more interesting with night lighting. Not to mention the tranquility of exploring a more empty Bruges and without the large number of tourists who go there to spend the day.
Spending more time in Bruges also allows visitors to more leisurely explore every corner of the city and some of the excellent museums, with collections of Flemish primitive art, contemporary art, archaeological finds, furniture, silverware and much more. Restaurants serving delicious local cuisine, unmissable chocolate shops and, of course, breweries where you can try world-renowned Belgian beers cannot be left out of the itinerary either.
The official language in Bruges is Flemish — the name given to the Dutch language spoken in Belgium — but French and English are widespread in the tourist areas of the city, which is already well used to tourism and, in general, welcomes everyone very well. From now on, we invite you to explore our Bruges guide, the result of our last wanderings through this destination that, we are sure, will conquer you right away!
Brugge, as it is called in Flemish, is considered by many to be one of the most photogenic tourist destinations in Europe. At every step through the historic center of the city, visitors feel as if they are inside a famous painting, in a setting made up of canals, Gothic buildings that have survived time, cobblestone streets, shops that exude the aroma of chocolate, fantastic museums. and much more.
Every season of the year is special in the city, but autumn and spring, in our opinion, are the most beautiful, calmest (especially on weekdays) and with the best weather. If you are going there during those times, prepare your camera. Another piece of advice is that the visitor should spend at least one night in the so-called Venice of the North. That's because at night the destination is even more special, lit up, outside that it gets calmer when most of the "one day" tourists leave the city.
Bruges is about an hour by train from Brussels. Therefore, an excellent choice for those who are in the Belgian capital, but want to explore something close by, discover tourist spots full of history such as the Grote Markt, the central square, where there are several colorful buildings and also the Belfry. From the top of this iconic building, there is even a beautiful view of the city, but be prepared to face 366 steps to reach the top. To go up without facing "crowds" and even run the risk of having to wait, as a large number of people are not allowed inside the attraction, arrive early and take a bottle of water with you to hydrate yourself along the way.
After exploring the famous square, take the time to walk a lot, discovering other fantastic addresses/points in the city, such as Burg squares, Jan Van Eyck squares, the São Bonifacio bridge and the super scenic Groenerei canal, where you will take beautiful photos. Wonderful churches full of priceless treasures are also on the way, such as Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk, the Church of Our Lady, where the sculpture of the Madonna and Child by Michelangelo is kept, and the stunning Basilica of the Holy Blood.
Another highly recommended program in Bruges is the boat trip through the canals, which lasts only half an hour, but yields beautiful moments and, of course, beautiful images. The ticket costs €8 (adults), €4 (children aged 4 to 11) and can only be paid in cash. Ah, the tours are still running in winter, but they are subject to cancellation due to bad weather. Boarding takes place near the Church of Our Lady (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk), on the corner of Nieuwstraat and Dijver.
Bruges is a super tourist destination and, therefore, accommodation options will not be lacking for those who are thinking about going. In the city, visitors will find luxury and budget hotels, bed & breakfast style inns, hostels and even season apartments.
Prices will depend a lot on the type of accommodation and the time of visit. Summer, for example, is considered one of the busiest seasons and, consequently, one of the most expensive. Make your reservations in advance if you want to visit Bruges at this time. Another trick to get away from high prices is to opt for weekdays instead of the weekend.
The good news is that being well located in Bruges is not something that is directly linked to high prices. This is because, despite the historic center being the most suitable area for those who want to do tourism in the city, it is possible to stay in regions a little further away, but still very close. The advantage is precisely that you pay less for it!
The tip is that you research the location of the hotel of your choice, before making the reservation. If this establishment is situated within 1 km (or a little more) of the central area of the city — reference tourist attractions such as the Grote Markt (the main square) and the Church of Our Lady (Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk, in Flemish) ) —, feel free to make your reservation. That's because Bruges is a perfect city for walking, as well as being very safe both day and night.
The region north of the historic center, close to the Jerusalem church, is highly recommended for those who want to pay a little less. In addition to sights such as the church itself and the museum, the area has restaurants, cafes and is a pleasant 10-minute walk from the Grote Markt.
Have fun!
