Bathed by Lake Geneva and on the banks of the River Rhône, Geneva is Switzerland's second largest city. A destination that, in addition to being a tourist destination, has enormous importance on the world stage as it is the headquarters of major organizations such as the United Nations (UN) and the Red Cross.

Known, therefore, as the Capital of Peace, Geneva conquers the visitor from the first moment by bringing together a little bit of everything in one place: natural beauties, history, art and culture, quality gastronomy, attractions for people of all ages and shopping opportunities, highlighting the renowned local watch industry.

Furthermore, we could not fail to mention that the French-speaking city of Geneva is very close to other tourist destinations that are very worthwhile for a daytrip, including Lausanne and Montreux, Switzerland, and Chamonix, France. The latter is a very popular place for those who like to ski.

Geneva is known as the most international city in Switzerland and because it brings together people of so many different nationalities, the receptivity to tourists is usually good. The local language is French — unlike Zurich, where German is spoken — but the English language is widespread throughout the city.

As in the rest of Switzerland, in Geneva the currency is the Swiss Franc (abbreviation: CHF), which circulates in coins of 5, 10, 20, 50 cents and 1, 2, 5 francs and notes of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 1000 francs. A slightly expensive city to visit, however, in this guide, you will also find tips on how to save a few francs during your stay.

The famous Jet d'Eau — a fountain that spouts water up to 140 meters high — is probably Geneva's most famous and photographed landmark. But in addition to this one, which is considered a great symbol of the capital of peace, we would like to highlight other equally interesting points that are worth visiting.

We are talking, for example, about the English Garden, a park that faces Lake Geneva and where the Flower Clock is located. Trees, a beautiful lawn, fountain and sculptures complete the lakeside setting, making it the perfect place for moments of pure relaxation at any time of day.

But if you're the type of tourist who can't do without a good museum, you can't miss visiting the UN headquarters and also the square in front of the palace, where the broken chair monument is located.

Two other must-see museums in Geneva are the Red Cross Museum, a true lesson in the history of humanitarian action, and also the archaeological site of St. Peter's Cathedral, whose temple was built in 1160. Interested in the history of the traditional watchmaking industry place? So don't forget to include the Patek Phillipe Museum in your itinerary.

Geneva is a city with options for the most varied audiences and to get to know the main points of this charming destination, you will need at least two full days. However, if you want to do everything calmly, "feel" the true soul of the city and also take the opportunity to do some day trips, book at least four full days.

As many already know, Geneva is a city located on the banks of the River Rhône and bathed by Lake Geneva, two attractions that are very successful in the summer. But that doesn't mean that when winter arrives, the city slows down, on the contrary. That's because Geneva's proximity to the Alps — Chamonix, France, is 80 kilometers away — makes everything easier for those who enjoy the ski season.

In addition to the beautiful lake and river, Geneva has a very pleasant tourist area to be explored on foot (the so-called Old Town). Along the way, apart from the various tourist attractions such as the Saint-Pierre Cathedral (from which you have a beautiful view from the top), there are many restaurants and bars, art galleries, shops for all tastes and budgets and much more.

Composing the beautiful scenery of the city, there are also beautiful bridges, such as the Pont des Bergues — which connects the city to the island of Rousseau (small park and island in the River Rhône) — and the bustling Pont Mont Blanc, built in 1862. Two excellent places to visit those who enjoy photographing beautiful landscapes, especially taking several incredible shots of the Jet d'água, the symbol of the city.

Geneva Pass

Purchasing the pass that gives free access to various tourist attractions and allows unlimited use of public transport can mean good savings for the visitor. Unlike most other European city passes, with the Geneva Pass the tourist does not need to visit a large number of attractions to make the investment worthwhile.

From the third attraction, the bearer starts saving money. A savings of 65%, according to the simulation made on the official website of the Geneva tourist office (card valid for 1 day).

Spending may be the focus of some visitors to the city, while others will try to save as much as possible. With that in mind, we’ve put together this post with tips that can help you save a few good francs during your stay in Geneva.

Another valuable and zero-cost tip, for example, is to wear a pair of comfortable shoes and take the opportunity to walk around the city, which is well structured for pedestrians.

Geneva is a destination with hotels of all types, from the most luxurious – several of them located by the lake – to the simplest. The bad news, however, is that prices there are not usually the most comrades, even in the case of more modest accommodations.

A good tip for those who want to spend less on accommodation is to look for hotels in regions that are a little further away from the city center. Bear in mind that the second largest Swiss city has excellent public transport, which makes life a lot easier for those who opt for other areas.

Have fun!
