Information About Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal is India's most recognizable mausoleum, built between 1632 and 1653 in the northern Indian city of Agra, Uttar Pradesh. Taj Mahal, a love architecture built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of Mumtaz Mahal, the mother of his 14 children and his beloved wife who died during childbirth, has a special place in the hearts of Indians and foreigners as a symbol of love.

The architects of the Taj Mahal, which was accepted as one of the seven wonders of the world with 100 million votes in 2007, are Mehmet Isa Efendi and Mehmet İsmail Efendi, students of Mimar Sinan. With its four minarets made of white marble, it is decorated with many precious stones such as emeralds, rubies, pearls and diamonds.

Taj Mahal, this architectural masterpiece that took 22 years to build, consists of a large garden, pool, prayer room and other mausoleums. Taj Mahal, where its four sides perfectly complement each other, almost reflects the image in the mirror.

The inscriptions on Mumtaz Mahal's tomb are dedicated to and praise him. Surah Yasin is among the articles written by the important calligraphers of the period in memory of Mumtaz Mahal inside and outside the place.

The marble structure is decorated with 28 kinds of precious and semi-precious stones. Turquoise was brought from Tibet, jade was brought from China, and marble, which was the main material in the construction of the building, was brought from Rajasthan. Unfortunately, during the Indian revolt in 1857, a large number of precious stones were removed by the British. At the end of the 19th century, the former governor of India, Lord Curzon, initiated the restoration of the mausoleum and completed it in 1908.

The white marble of the Taj Mahal looks pink in the morning, white during the day and golden yellow at night, reflecting in different colors at different times of the day. The building, which was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983, hosts 3 million visitors a year.

Although there are legends that Shah Cihan wanted his mausoleum to be made of black marble, no evidence of this was found. It is likely that the fictional writings of the European traveler Jean-Baptiste Tavernier form the basis of these legends.
