About 300 kilometers away from Lisbon, in the North of Portugal, is Porto, the second largest city and also one of the oldest in the country. Located on the right bank of the Douro River, the destination enchants at first sight for the mixture of the concrete of the old buildings with breathtaking natural landscapes, for the history, first-class cuisine, attractions for all audiences and also for the receptivity to the tourist.

Walking through the charming alleys of Porto, by the way, is like revisiting the past. As we walk along the cobblestone pavement and marvel at such beauty, we feel the true spirit of the destination that, in 1996, had its historic center recognized as a World Heritage Site by Unesco (basically, up to the limits of the Medieval Wall).

And speaking of beautiful landscapes, those that leave anyone with their jaws dropped, we cannot fail to mention here the famous bridges of Porto, constructions that allow the contemplation of the city at the most different hours of the day. Among them is the Maria Pia railway bridge (1877), designed by none other than the Frenchman Gustave Eiffel.

Another well-known bridge is the Luís I road - whose structure was completed by an Eiffel student. Remembering that the visit to Porto is not complete without the tourist using the structure to cross to "the other side" of the Douro River, where Vila Nova de Gaia is located, a municipality where Port wine cellars are located, such as Sandeman, Taylor and Cálem. Places that promote guided tours every day and where the visitor will have a good idea of the typology, manufacturing methods and taste of the wine.

As in most European countries, in Portugal the official currency is the Euro (€). The difference is that tourism in Portuguese cities is considered much more affordable than in Paris and London, for example.

Proof of this is that with 10 or 15 euros, even less than that, in some cases, you can have a nice meal in Porto. In addition, entrance fees to most attractions are not expensive, not even in Port wine cellars.

In the "capital of the North", as it is called, you will still find a very friendly people who tend to treat tourists well. Take advantage of the fact that you speak the same language as the hosts to fully explore all that the city has to offer, locals proudly speak about the wonders of the region, which is one of the most touristy in the country!

Porto is a city of countless possibilities and where you will certainly not be without something to do for a single minute. To enjoy all that this destination has to offer, it takes a certain breath - and not only to climb the steep stairs and slopes of the city, but also to make the most of the daytime and nighttime attractions.

Those who want to see a lot, but still save money, can purchase the Porto Card. A discount card that entitles you to museums and tourist attractions, grants discounts at restaurants, Cruises along the Douro River, in addition to allowing unlimited use of public transport.

In Porto, visitors will find accommodation options for all tastes, from luxurious hotels, establishments belonging to large global chains to inns.

To do everything (or practically everything) on foot: choose hotels located in the so-called Baixa Portuense. Addresses/sights in the city, such as Avenida dos Aliados, Torre dos Clérigos, São Bento Station and Rua de Santa Catarina, are excellent for those who want to be well located.

In addition to those mentioned above, we cannot fail to mention Ribeira, which is also super central, as well as offering one of the most beautiful views of the Douro River and a lively nightlife.

The tip for those who want to spend less is to book well in advance; in addition, it is good to know that some seasons can be cheaper than others, for example staying in the city during the summer is usually more expensive.

As in the rest of Europe, in Porto the seasons are usually well defined. July, for example, is a good month for those who enjoy intense heat and also for those who don't mind the fact that the city will probably be busier.

Have fun!
