Small, cozy and charming. Siena is worthy of all these adjectives and many others. Seen from above, it looks like a maze of narrow streets, which reminds us of its medieval essence. Walking through the streets of Siena is like being in a movie about the Middle Ages. The streets, occupied by buildings made of stone in Romanesque and Gothic styles, among others, hold good surprises: museums, shops, restaurants and ice cream parlors make the city a mixture of the old and the new.

Museums keep treasures and enchant by architecture. The churches, then, are not even talked about. Each building grander than the last. And if you like to relax, how about sitting down and having an ice cream in the famous Piazza del Campo, setting of the Palio di Siena, a centuries-old horse race that fills the city every year? Siena is many in one: it has culture, art, parks, fairs, monuments that fascinate, landscapes that impress. And always with a touch of delicacy, like the flowers that residents leave in the windows. A courtesy of the Sieneses for tourists.

Siena has unmissable monuments: the Torre del Mangia, for example, offers a breathtaking view. Orto de'Pecci is an oasis for those who want to relax: it has an incredible green field, a beautiful landscape and even a medieval vegetable garden. Do you like fairs? Mercato de Santa Barbara moves the city every Wednesday. The Duomo is another hidden treasure in Siena: beautiful on the outside, wonderful on the inside!

In short, you can't choose a favorite Tuscan city until you get to know Siena. The city is so preserved that it seems to have stopped in time. But the merchants, the tourists and the daytime hustle are there to remind us that time hasn't stopped, it's just been too generous with this amazing place!

Despite its small size, Siena has a wide range of attractions. As in all of Italy, churches attract attention and are part of the list of things to do in the city. Among the main ones are the basilicas of San Domenico and San Francesco, in addition to the famous Duomo, of course. Among the museums, the must-see are the Pinacoteca Nazionale and the Museo dell'Opera, with several works by Senese artists and a special attraction, the Facciatone, from which you have a beautiful view of the city!

Piazza del Campo is the center of tourism in Siena. There are the Torre del Mangia and the Palazzo Pubblico, which today houses the Museo Civico. Climbing the tower is tiring, but the reward can be felt as soon as we reach the top. The landscape is breathtaking! I don't feel like leaving at all.

For those who want to be closer to nature, we suggest the botanical orto, with beautiful plants and a breathtaking view, and the Orto de' Pecci, a refuge in the middle of the city.

Despite being very small, Siena has 17 "neighborhoods" (yes, 17!). This is confirmed when we walk around the city: residents of each of these neighborhoods (which are actually tiny- some are just a single street) place flags in the windows and, in this way, we can see how local people are. Neighborhood that translates into the famous Palio di Siena race, inclusive. Despite these divisions, the city is very small and, for accommodation, you can only consider two areas: inside the wall and outside the wall.

Staying inside the wall (historic center) is an advantage, as most attractions are there. You won't have to walk far to move around the city. There is also no need to worry about noise from tourists at night: the city does not have a busy nightlife and therefore has no problem with noise, even in the busiest areas. The price of hotels in the historic center, however, tends to be a little higher, due to the location.

There are several hotels outside the wall. The furthest ones are about 2 kilometers from the historic center; others, just 500 meters away. Siena is small and, even though it is out of the center, it usually doesn't take long to reach the main monuments. Staying outside the wall can be interesting for those who do not like crowded places and prefer more tranquility. Regarding security, there is nothing to worry about. You can walk outside the wall peacefully at night. Despite being more deserted, there are no records of robberies in the region. Outside the wall, there are good hotels with more reasonable prices.

When choosing the hotel, it is worth calculating the distance to the historic center and, if you have a car, check if the hotel has a garage (in general, only hotels outside the city walls have this privilege).

The tip for those who want to spend less is to book well in advance; in addition, it is good to know that some seasons can be cheaper than others, for example staying in the city during the summer is usually more expensive.

As in the rest of Europe, in Siena the seasons are usually well defined. July, for example, is a good month for those who enjoy intense heat and also for those who don't mind the fact that the city will probably be busier.
