Waters in a shade of turquoise blue that you only have to see up close to believe, marine life in abundance, white sand, limestone cliffs and a lot of green around complete the paradisiacal scenery of Phi Phi (pronounced Pi Pi), the famous island of southern Thailand, which served as the backdrop for the movie "The Beach", with actor Leonardo DiCaprio.

In fact, the Hollywood production was filmed on Phi Phi Leh, one of six islands in the beautiful region. To get to know it, however, you must depart from places like Phi Phi Don - the largest of them and the only inhabited island in the archipelago, a small town easily accessed from Phuket or Krabi, where there are several luxury hotels and resorts.

Despite being small, Phi Phi Don is always full of tourists of all ages and parts of the world; it is so famous that, unfortunately, it ended up becoming one of the most expensive destinations in Southeast Asia. The focus of visitors, of course, are the beautiful beaches in the region - from the quietest, almost deserted, to the busiest, but it's good to remember that the island also has a pulsating nightlife, full of bars and superanimated nightclubs.

Before closing your bags and leaving for the wonders of Phi Phi, it's good to find out about the local climate, especially if you intend to enjoy sunny days. Two seasons predominate on the island throughout the year: the dry season - which runs from mid-December to April - and the rainy season - from May to mid-November.

Temperatures are always high; therefore, be prepared to face the intense heat on the island. Also, be very aware if the intention is to visit the destination during the rainy season. This is because many unmissable tours, such as the visit to the famous Maya Bay, for example, may end up being cancelled.

The highlight of Phi Phi is, without a doubt, the Andaman Sea; after all, they are paradisiacal settings that made the island famous all over the world: water in turquoise tones, warm; white sands; and green in abundance. In fact, the island offers everything from calmer beaches - where you can relax a lot - to the most popular ones - where you need to arrive early if you want to enjoy the landscapes with some peace of mind.

Remember that Phi Phi Don is the only inhabited island in the region. From there it is possible to access some beaches on foot or by bicycle (on the island it is possible to rent one), but it is likely that most of the time it will be necessary to rent a taxi boat to visit the most famous ones.

On some beaches, like Long Beach, for example, you pay THB 100 to go there and THB 100 more to come back (price per person), but be careful, as not all beaches have taxi boats available at all times.

The tip for those in groups of more than two people, for example, is to book a private boat, for 4 to 6 hour tours in a row. The rent comes out to around 60 USD and is worth even more if the amount is divided between several people.

Water sports enthusiasts will also find a large number of companies offering the most diverse packages, such as snorkeling in Ko Mai Phai (to the north) and diving in areas such as Anemone Reef, Hin Bida (where you can see many sharks) and Maya bay (in Phi Phi Leh).

Night

Tonsai Village, the heart of Phi Phi Don, is quieter during the day, but at night, the area transforms into a super-hip spot. Shops/street fairs, good restaurants, bars and nightclubs are everywhere, where it is only possible to walk.

In these streets there are also stalls that sell drinks served in small colorful buckets, the famous drinks of Phi Phi, however, you must be careful when choosing the place, as there are reports of the use of counterfeit drinks and/or contaminated ice, which can trigger a serious health problem and spoil your trip. Stay tuned!

As the boat approaches the Bay of Maya, in Phi Phi Leh, a stunning scenery appears before the eyes and leaves the visitor awestruck: sea in impressive shades of blue, between limestone cliffs 100 meters high and a beautiful nature all around - the true vision of paradise.

The landscapes of the bay are famous worldwide because of the movie "The Beach", starring actor Leonardo diCaprio (2000). And the easiest way to get to know them is by renting a boat, the famous longtail boats, departing from Phi Phi Don as early as possible. That's because, from 10 am, the beach starts to get too crowded. In general, boat rental costs from USD 60 (for up to four people) and includes passage through other points on the island, such as the Vikings cave and a stop for snorkeling.

When disembarking in Maya bay, the visitor pays a fee of THB 200, equivalent to 7 USD. On site there is also a tent selling drinks and a few snacks, but the tip for those who want to save money is to stop by a supermarket in Phi Phi Don, first, to buy quick snacks to take away.

Phi Phi Don is full of accommodation options; there are hostels, hotels of all categories and several luxury resorts. The bad news is the prices, which are not usually the "most affordable". The tip for those who want to save money, therefore, is to book well in advance - even to guarantee the stay, especially in high season - or opt for simpler accommodations, such as hostels, for example.

Those who want to stay close to some beaches - like Tonsai, Loh Dalum, Long Beach - and also like to enjoy nightlife can stay in the village of Tonsai, the heart of Phi Phi Don. In the village, it is possible to do several programs on foot or by bicycle, one of the most used means of transport there. For some more distant beaches, however, it is necessary to rent a boat or take a taxi boat.

As we said, there is a really large number of medium and high-end resorts in the popular region, but it is good to be aware, as some of them are located some distance from the central area of Phi Phi Don, making it necessary to take a boat to enjoy the attractions. from the village. It is a solution for those who want to rest and a problem for those who are looking for a lot of hype.
