Albania is a mix of mountains and history, with beautiful beaches and breathtaking landscapes. In addition, the country is welcoming, with one of the most humble and hospitable people we have ever known in Europe.

If you, like us, love sun, heat and beaches, this place was made for you. But if you also love to venture into the mountains, go hiking and learn about past civilizations, this article is also for you.

Albania is in Europe, in the region known as the Balkans and is bordered by Macedonia and Kosovo to the east, Montenegro to the north and Greece to the south and southeast. It is a relatively small country, but difficult to get around due to mountainous roads and poor public transport.

The country has one of the most beautiful seas in the region, but with the advantage of being much cheaper than its neighbors Croatia and Greece. We could say that many beaches on the Albanian Riviera are much better than those in Greece, for example, because we know both countries well.

Albanian is the language spoken in the country, being classified as an Indo-European language. Initially it may sound like Italian or Greek and even the accent sounds similar, but you will soon realize that the Albanian language has nothing to do with any of these languages.

It is a beautiful language, but difficult as the words are completely different from those we know and inherit from other languages. It is further divided into 2 main dialects called Tosk and Gheg. The Albanian language is still spoken by part of the population of neighboring countries such as Macedonia and Kosovo, for example.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that you do not need to speak the language to tour Albania, but it is essential that you know English to communicate. That's because some people there speak the language well and it's the best way to communicate anywhere in the world.

Tip: The currency of Albania is called Albanian Lek (ALL) and therefore it is only used in the country. On the bright side, Albania is a cheap country to travel to because it has one of the weakest economies in Europe.

If you are going to do tourism in Albania, it is recommended to take Euros and exchange them at exchange offices (which are few) or withdraw them at ATMs. Credit cards are not so easily accepted across the country.

The country is mountainous on one side, while on the other it is bordered by the sea. Usually the roads that go around the sea are at high altitudes with small tracks that go down and give access to the beaches, often only accessible by car.

As we mentioned earlier, traveling through the country, full of mountainous roads and very few public transport options, can be a little tricky. Therefore, we recommend that you rent a car to travel there.

The territorial extension of Albania is 28,748km2 with a population of 3 million inhabitants. About 1/3 of these inhabitants live in Tirana, which is the capital and largest city in the country.

Those who like beaches will be super satisfied when traveling to Albania, after all there are almost 450 km of coastline, with beautiful beaches with turquoise blue sea like our favorite, Ksamil. The Adriatic and Ionian Seas put on a show of their own and that is why it is the main attraction for tourism in Albania.

Albania was part of the Ottoman Empire for over 400 years, so you will notice many features in the architecture and historical monuments. The country was part of the communist regime, but broke relations with the Soviet Union in 1961.

It then allied itself with China, but in 1978 the dictator Enver Hoxha broke off relations with it and with all countries in the world. This made Albania the most isolated country in the world for nearly 50 years.

During this time few people could enter or leave the country, excluding the total possibility of tourism in Albania. However, this lasted until 1990, when Albania began to look for ties with the West.

In 1992 the Democratic Party won the elections and entered the government. From then on, things improved, in relation to the opening of the country, but Albania is still getting back on its feet and recovering from the delay of all these years.

One of the main influencers of this growth has been tourism in Albania which has been growing every year. Above all, Albania has increasingly become a summer destination.
