Malta
The amazing Malta is a destination full of charm that is increasingly attracting the attention of international tourism. And if you are planning your trip to this small Mediterranean country, come and discover what to do in Malta with us!
When is the best time to visit Malta? Where to stay? How to get around the island? In this post you will find a complete guide to enjoy all the attractions, activities and experiences in Malta.
Located between southern Europe and northern Africa, Malta is already a popular destination among Europeans. The reasons are quite obvious: the climate, its beaches with turquoise blue water and more affordable prices than other destinations on the continent.
Among the attractions of the archipelago, there are historical sites, cultural tours, some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe and a first class gastronomy.
With an average of 300 days of sunshine a year, without a doubt, Malta is a destination that can be visited all year round. However, when considering the best month to go to Malta, there are some points that need to be raised.
The months of July and August are the most sought after by tourists due to the summer heat and the delicious waters for a dip.
The heat draws throngs of tourists to the country, which means everything gets busier and more expensive.
If you're on the team that doesn't like crowds, it's better to avoid the hottest months of the year. On the other hand, if you want to party, don't think twice and schedule your trip for this period.
Between May and June, September and October the weather is great and prices are usually more affordable than in high season. Therefore, this can be considered the best time to visit Malta.
If your trip to this destination is during the hottest time of the year and you want to know what to do in Malta in the summer? Of course the main attraction is the beaches. The water is at a super nice temperature and perfect for diving. In addition, several festivals rock the region, such as the Jazz Festival in July and the Glitch Festival in August.
On the other hand, the winter months coincide with the rains in Malta. December and January, for example, are very rainy months. With that, little is taken advantage of the beaches. So, my recommendation is to focus on trips to museums and archaeological sites.
During winter and spring, 4 days are more than enough to explore Malta. However, during the warmer months, I recommend 7 to 10 days to enjoy both the area's beaches and historic sites.
If you don't like the idea of driving in another country or are looking for cost-effective transport solutions, know that the public transport system works very well in Malta.
You can get to most places by bus and the ticket is very affordable. For only 2 euros you can take the bus and change within 2 hours. The only downside is that it means walking a long way from bus stops to tourist attractions.
Located on the island of Comino, the Blue Lagoon is one of Malta's postcards. Boats arrive daily from neighboring Malta and Gozo with tourists eager to discover the turquoise waters of this beach.
The structure of the place is very good and has bathrooms, restaurants, bars, umbrella rental. In addition, it is possible to parasail or take a SUP ride.
Due to its fame, the place is usually very crowded during the high season. Therefore, the good thing is to arrive early to guarantee a little space with an umbrella. Another option is to walk away from the crowds and find other beautiful places to dive more peacefully.
Tip: as it is very busy, I recommend buying your day tour in advance, especially if your trip is scheduled for July or August (high season).
The main city is the capital, Valletta. It has a relaxed atmosphere with many options for shops, bars and restaurants. On the other hand, if your goal is to enjoy the beaches, I recommend the Mellieha Bay area. If your vibe is to enjoy the busy nightlife of Malta, St. Julian's is the good choice. Families love the tranquility of St. Paul's Bay.
Another super tip is to break your stay into two or more regions. This way, you will optimize your trip and enjoy every corner of the archipelago without spending so much time traveling. I suggest 2-3 nights in each of the following cities: Valletta, St. Paul's Bay and Marsaxlokk.
The Phoenicia Malta
Wondering which are the best hotels in Malta? In the capital, I recommend The Phenicia Malta. With a luxurious structure and personalized service, this is one of the best hotels in the city.
Radison Blu Resort & Spa
Do you want to have the experience of facing the sea and being able to take a dip as soon as you wake up? Then Radison Blu, which is located in Golden Bay, may be the best option for you!
Labranda Riviera Hotel
Another delightful option on Mellieha's beaches is the Labranda Riviera Hotel. It is located in Marfa Bay, facing the sea, and has more affordable rates.
