Dive in Thailand

undefined

Thailand is an amazing diving destination and there is sooo much to explore underwater. Great visibility, shore reefs, deep drops, shipwrecks, walls, caves... The Gulf of Thailand offers natural beauty and impressive marine life. The variety of dive sites attract professional and amateur divers.

Diving in Thailand is much cheaper than in many other places in the world – this is because the baht, the local currency, is quite devalued, so you can do a baptism dive or get your certificate for a much lower value than in other countries. countries such as Egypt and Australia. Below we will talk in detail about how much it costs to dive in Thailand.

The ease of diving is another positive point: we had this experience in Koh Phi Phi and the diving spots were close to Tonsai, where we stayed. Several agencies on the island offer the tour, so it is very easy for you to organize your dive in advance or even the day before, depending on the season.

Where to dive in Thailand

Below I will list the best places to dive in Thailand, but this post is dedicated to the experience we had on the Phi Phi Islands. If you are going to visit other beaches, it is worth taking a look at the list and perhaps choosing another spot for diving.

Koh Tao: is considered the best place for diving in Thailand and also the cheapest! There are several diving schools there, where you can get an Open Water Diver or Fun Diver certificate. The course costs an average of 9,000 baht (R$900 approximately), lasting 3 days. A value much lower than anywhere else in the world.

Sail Rock – This is one of the best “wall dive” spots in Thailand. This region is north of Koh Phangan and Koh Samui. You might be lucky enough to see bearded scorpionfish, sea anemones and pink anemone fish. Yellow moray eels, reef crabs and spotted shrimp are also abundant.

HTMS Khram – In 2003 a Thai navy vessel was purposely sunk as an artificial reef in 2003. It lies upright at about 30 metres/100 feet, with its top at about 15 metres/50 feet. It's easy to see the bridge and radio room! It must be an amazing experience.

Koh Phi Phi: our trip to Thailand was short, so we only had 3 days at the beach and we chose to visit Koh Phi Phi. If your itinerary is also tight and this is your beach destination, I strongly recommend diving there. As it is the most famous island in Thailand, everything is more crowded, but it is still worth living this experience and you will find great instructors at ProFun Divers.

How is diving in Koh Phi Phi

The Profun store is located in Tonsai, the main center of Koh Phi Phi, where hotels, restaurants and parties are located. The day before the dive, rwm to go to the shop in the late afternoon to fill out some paperwork (personal data and have a checklist to verify your health) and get all the details right.

There are two dives daily: in the morning and in the afternoon. We did it in the morning and the meeting point was at the store, at 7:15 am. We walked all together towards the pier and, after paying the preservation fee there (400baht), we headed to the boat.

Profun's boat is very big and equipped for diving. At the bottom are all the equipment and at the top, a table, benches, a large “lounge” with a beautiful look and also a bathroom. Everything is clean and well taken care of.

A big differential at Profun is that each instructor goes with a maximum of three people, so they are small and very exclusive groups.

first dive stop: Koh Bida Nai, a tiny island that is close to Koh Phi Phi Leh, where famous beaches like Maya Bay are located.

Along the way, the instructors passed on a lot of information to us, while we put on our clothes, booties and then the fins and diving equipment.

Is diving difficult?

No! The important thing is that you choose a school with good instructors, who will give you all the rules and explain everything. If you take it easy and listen carefully to everything, you'll get it right! Instructors are certified and follow all safety measures.

Will the ears hurt?

The instructor will teach you how to equalize your ear pressure during the dive. It is recommended that you train beforehand, so that you can get used to it, which will make it easier when you come down. If you have any respiratory or ear problems, it's a good idea to talk to the instructor so that he can give you the most appropriate instructions. I usually have sinusitis, but I didn't feel anything at the time, just go down and equalize, until the ears get used to the pressure. If you are in too much pain, signal the instructor and he will know what to do.

I do not know how to swim! Can I still do the diving?

Yes!! On the baptism dive, the instructor swims with you at all times – in fact, he will make almost no effort, he will “carry” you throughout the entire dive. It's important to tap your feet (with the fins it's easier!), but the feeling is that you're floating without having to do anything.

How many meters can I descend during the dive?

On the first dive (which we did) we went down to a maximum of 12 meters. It will depend on how you will come out. Advanced divers can dive deeper than that.

What is the water temperature?

The average water temperature in Koh Phi Phi is very nice and warm, around 29ºC. During the dive we passed through some colder water currents, but for that we used a 3mm wetsuit, so as not to get cold and the body to have a good temperature.

What will I see during the dive?

Marine life is very rich! Of course, you can't say everything you'll see underwater, but normally, we see: baby shark, turtle, giant schools, moray eel, super colorful and bigger fish, many colorful corals, a striped sea snake... ! It's wonderful and a unique experience.

Checklist: what to bring for the dive

Sunglasses;

Cap or hat;

GoPro (with waterproof case, in case you want to use it while diving)
