Brazil
Paraty is one of the favorite destinations in the State of Rio de Janeiro and the beaches are the highlight of the region. From the most popular to the most deserted, all the beaches in Paraty are fascinating.
Are you planning your trip to this incredible city? Then you need to know the 12 best beaches in Paraty and its surroundings. We made a list of wonderful places for you to visit. Continue reading to find out which beaches will make your trip unforgettable!
First of all, Paraty is a kind of magical city, where the history of our colonial period meets the unparalleled beauties of the region. The streets of the Historic Center are truly charming and strolling through them takes us back to the days of the sugar barons and baronesses.
However, there is a part of Paraty's wealth that is not visible to the eye at first. The beaches in Paraty attract thousands of tourists from Brazil and the world because of their unique beauty and the perfect encounter between the Atlantic Forest and the sea.
From the most popular to the most deserted, in Paraty you will find beaches with a breathtaking view. Transparent calm waters in shades of green and incredible blue set the tone there and invite you to dive, practice SUP and enjoy the sea bath.
But it is worth remembering that the best beaches in Paraty are accessible by boat and some of them are still outside the conventional schooner circuit. For you to get to know these beaches better, we made a really cool list talking a little more about them and I'm sure you'll be impressed with their beauty.
How to get to Paraty
Paraty is a city located on the so-called Costa Verde of the State of Rio de Janeiro and is close to other well-known tourist destinations, Angra dos Reis and Ilha Grande. The nearest airport is in Rio de Janeiro (Tom Jobim International Airport), which is 243km away.
To get to Paraty you must take the BR-101 all the way to the entrance of Paraty. But be aware, especially in the rain, as the road is very winding and all in two lanes.
If you come from other states, I recommend renting a car to get to Paraty.
What is the best beach in Paraty to stay
One of the best regions to stay in Paraty is the Historic Center, but we know that it is not on the seafront. Therefore, for those who want to stay with their feet in the sand and in a quieter area, Praia do Jabaquara is a great option, but remember that it will take a short walk to the center.
On the other hand, for those who prefer to stay close to the centre, Praia do Pontal also has some good suggestions for accommodation. With that, to choose the best place to stay in Paraty, just take into account how close to the center you want to stay.
If you want to stay in a more isolated and beautiful place, facing the sea, our top tip is this house in Paraty Mirim, next to Saco do Mamanguá. You will see later in this post how beautiful this region is.
First of all, you need to know that the beaches of Jabaquara and Pontal are the closest to the historic center and accessible by car. However, they are not as good for bathing as those on the islands, but that doesn't mean they aren't worth knowing.
If you are staying in the historic center, for example, I recommend taking a walk at the end of the day along the edge of these beaches, or stopping at one of the restaurants and enjoying delicious seafood dishes. The view is beautiful and a full plate for very nice photos.
1. Jabaquara
First up is Praia do Jabaquara, which is a short walk from the historic center of Paraty. Despite the calm sea, it is not one of the best for swimming as I said, but still many tourists go to the region to practice SUP, sailing and kayaking.
With a longer stretch of sand and some kiosks and restaurants on the shore, Praia do Jabaquara is that type of place to enjoy Paraty after a day out on a boat. In addition, here you will find some inns and hotels for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city center.
2. Punctual
Close to the historic center, Praia do Pontal is quite busy. Here, bathing in the sea is not the favorite activity of its visitors, but sitting in the kiosks and restaurants to have a cold beer and eat some fresh seafood snacks.
Because of the mangrove, the waters of Praia do Pontal are darker. Also, this is where boats leave from, so we always see some kind of oil coming out of boats. Because of that, it is not good for bathing, but sitting here and relaxing is a great activity in Paraty at the end of the day.
Undoubtedly, the best beaches in Paraty are those that you need to take a boat to get to. There are several schooner trips that leave from the pier and go through many of them. However, I think that renting a private boat gives you greater freedom to visit some beaches outside the schooner circuit, not to mention that the boat will be available if you want to stay longer somewhere.
Let's get to know the best beaches in Paraty accessible by boat.
03. Saco da Velha
Saco da Velha is a very charming little cove framed by the Atlantic Forest and bathed by the calm waters of the bay of Paraty. Several boats stop here, especially at lunchtime and with that you won't always be able to see all the beauties of the place. That's why I recommend a private tour to better explore the region.
Saco da Velha is located in front of Ilha do Algodão and is a great place to dive in the rocks. In addition, there lives a friendly gentleman who takes you to a lookout point and also to a cave on the beach.
04. Cotton Island
Ilha do Algodão is the largest in the Paraty region and its transparent waters are perfect for those who enjoy diving. She is one of the darlings of the bay of Paraty and many boats and schooners make a stop on the island for you to take a dip in the water.
Another tip on Ilha do Algodão is the Hiltinho Restaurant (you can find another restaurant in the center). It is very famous in the region and serves seafood dishes, as well as very fresh snacks and drinks.
