France's lavender fields

undefined

iIf you are planning your trip to the south of France and want to include the lavender fields of Provance in your itinerary,, you are in the right place! Here I share the best tips for you to make that dream come true: when to visit them, which cities to include in the itinerary, the best time to photograph and other unmissable tips!

Stunning lavender fields over hills creating an enchanting scent in the air, cute little villages with cobbled streets and finger-licking food. How not to love this region of France?

The location is still not as trendy as the capital Paris or the French Riviera, but it is touristy enough to have great restaurants, souvenir shops and wonderful lavender and artisan boutiques.

And if you're one of those people who likes to travel, especially when it comes to a place where people don't speak your language, come with me to discover the lavender fields of France!

Where are the Lavender fields in France?

If there's one place in particular that's become synonymous with lavender, it's Provence, France. With picturesque villages and rolling countryside, I would venture to say that the Provence region is the best place in the world to see fields upon fields of lavender.

But where is Provence? It is located in the southeast of France, more specifically on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and is a place full of natural beauties to discover. In addition to the lavender fields, there are alps, forests, vineyards… And more! Provence still borders Italy, allowing you to make this connection with yet another beautiful country in Europe.

Now let's get down to business? Here's everything you need to know to visit the beautiful explosion of color in Provence's lavender fields.

Provence's lavender fields are only visible from late June to mid-July. If you're not planning your trip around this time, the lovely lavender fields might be thinner.

In June, the lavender begins to bloom, but it will still be green. In late July and early August it will be harvested. Therefore, there is no point in going in April or December expecting to see them. The best time to find them (according to my research online, asking people and looking at photos from the previous year) is the first week or two of July.

It is worth knowing that Provence is divided into several areas and each of them has different flowering and harvesting times. It all depends on altitude, climate and variety. So if you arrive a little earlier or later in the season, you might find a field or two of beautiful purple lavender.

Fields in the Luberon and Rhone valleys begin to bloom around mid-June

The Provencal fields of the Drome and the Valensole plateau begin around the beginning of July

The fields around Sault start to bloom in mid-July

July and August are the hottest months of the year. Temperatures hover around 35°C, but it can feel over 40°C. However, the good news is that the climate is very dry.

If you're someone who can't handle heat or sun very well, keep that in mind and book a car with good air conditioning. I also recommend bringing sunscreen, a hat and plenty of water! With hot and dry weather, it is easy to become dehydrated.

By the way, here's another tip: tap water is drinkable in France, so you can easily replenish your supply!

I recommend that you make a reservation, as the high season in Provence is precisely in the summer and you may not get your preferred car or you may find exorbitant prices at the last minute.

When booking, pay attention to the following detail: European cars tend to be quite compact, so large suitcases can be a problem. Another important point to get is a GPS – this will make your trip a lot easier.

Plan which lavender fields you plan to include in your itinerary, but keep an open mind. As many of these country roads don't have names or numbers, you might not be able to find the exact camp you had in mind, but there will be another one just around the corner!

Here are two names of important producers in the region that you can put on your GPS to guide you:

Abbaye Notre Dame de Sénanque, in Gordes;

Lavandes Angelvin, in Valensole.

The best way to get to know Provence is with flexibility and time to roam around the villages in the interior of France that make up this beautiful region. Go with an outline of what you'd like to experience, but leave room for surprises along the way. Don't make your script so hard and full of schedules for everything.

There is so much to see and do in the Provence region! From the lavender fields of Valensole to the Calanques of Cassis, there are still many medieval towns and other villages considered the most beautiful in France. Here are some of the villages that cannot be left out of your itinerary:

Roussillon – the ocher city

Gordes – one of the most beautiful cities in France

Avignon – the residence of the Popes

Arles – the passion of many artists

Les Baux-de-Provence – the calm in the city

There are no big cities in the lavender areas of France. Therefore, there are not many options for staying in the area, especially if you are not on a high budget.

Gordes, Luberon, Sault and Valensole are the best accommodation options if you want to be very close to the lavender fields. If you prefer to do just a day trip from some of the main cities in Provence, I recommend searching for hotels in Avignon or Aix en Provence. We opted for the second option and stayed in Aix.

Here are my suggestions for hotels in both cities:

Avignon: for those looking for refinement, I recommend La Mirande and Hôtel Cloitre Saint Louis, both super charming – especially for being historic buildings. For travelers with an economic profile, the Hôtel Central and the HO36 Avignon are good choices.

Aix en Provence: the Hôtel de France is ideal for those looking for comfort and a good location. For those who prefer a more luxurious hotel with impeccable service, our suggestion is the Aquabella Hôtel & Spa. And if you are interested in a hotel with good value for money, without leaving comfort aside, you can bet on La Caravelle or the Apart-hotel Odalys.
