Minas Gerais
cConceição do Ibitipoca is located in the Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais, about 80km from Juiz de Fora. The village is a district of the municipality of Lima Duarte and is part of the Serra da Mantiqueira. If you are looking for a piece of paradise on earth, where you can have peace, tranquility and close contact with nature, Ibitipoca is the ideal destination for you! In summary, this destination pleases different types of people for its versatility and beauty. What many don't talk about is how cheap this destination is, as well as some problems when visiting this place.
Ibitipoca is that kind of destination that you visit once, fall in love with and want to return at the first opportunity. I myself have visited the village at least 5 times and I never get tired of doing the trails, diving in the waterfalls and walking around the village. I often say that I am a traveler from Ibitipoca!
Known for its natural beauties, Ibiti (as it is called by those close to it) has countless waterfalls, lakes, caves and caverns. In other words, it is the perfect destination for those who like to practice trails, take trips that are more roots and adventurous.
The closest airport to Ibitipoca is in Juiz de Fora, however, you are more likely to find better deals on flights to Rio de Janeiro or Belo Horizonte. From there, the best way to travel is by car.
Leaving from Rio de Janeiro, take the BR 040 towards Belo Horizonte and, after Juiz de Fora, take the BR 267 to the city of Lima Duarte. After that, just take the road that leads to Conceição do Ibitipoca.
It is about 270km away and this journey takes just over 4 hours. Be aware that there are tolls along the way. In addition, the road between Lima Duarte and Ibitipoca is very precarious and in case of rain, the road may be in worse conditions.
For those departing from Belo Horizonte, the journey is along the BR 040 towards Rio de Janeiro and, just before Juiz de Fora, it is necessary to take the BR 267. The 330km trip takes about 5h30.
In Ibitipoca, the months of May to September are the most popular for hiking
Summer has a better climate to enjoy the waterfalls, but it is a time with more incidence of storms. And what to do in Ibitipoca with rain?
If you arrive in Ibitipoca and it starts to rain, it might not be possible to visit the park. Depending on the forecast, they close because of the great risk of lightning.
In this case, my tip is that you take advantage of the rainy weather to relax at the inn. Another option is to take the opportunity to get to know more of the village and taste the local culinary delights. Later I will share my restaurant tips!
In my opinion, inns are an important part of making your trip to Ibitipoca a success, so it's important to choose where you're going to stay.
Although Ibitipoca is a more rustic place surrounded by nature, there are options for all types of travelers, including those who like more comfort. Don't go expecting luxury, but rather cozy chalets and inns with that nice mountain climate.
The Hotel Serra do Ibitipoca was what we chose for our visit to the village. The chalets are spacious and far from each other, ensuring tranquility for all guests.
With an outdoor pool, barbecue, sauna, games room, bar and hot tub available to guests, the place is positioned as a “leisure hotel” precisely because of its extra amenities and wonderful activities.
Not to mention the elaborate breakfast buffet that is served daily and the restaurant that is open for lunch and dinner. We love the service and all the infrastructure offered by the establishment. We highly recommend!
