The largest open-air art museum in the world, Inhotim brings art and nature into harmony. For those who enjoy art, architecture, landscaping and culture, it is the perfect destination! In today's post, find out everything you need to know to plan your visit to Inhotim: how to get there, where to stay, where to eat, main works, prices, packages, going with children...
Located 1h30 from Belo Horizonte, Inhotim is a great weekend getaway for those who live in the southeast region. It can also be combined with other trips through the interior of Minas Gerais, such as Serra do Cipó and Ibitipoca.
The Institute is a mix of an open-air museum of contemporary art, a botanical garden and an ecological reserve. There you will find more than 20 galleries with works by almost a hundred artists from 26 different nationalities, including installations, sculptures, photographs, videos and prints.
In addition to all the works of art scattered throughout the complex, the museum has a botanical garden that is the envy of many others out there. It is believed that the largest collection of palm trees in the world is here, with around 1500 units.
The landscaping is impeccable and, of course, has a touch of Burle Marx. The gardens also have incredibly large wooden benches by designer Hugo França. They are made from logs and roots that are found fallen or dead in the forest.
sSo incredible, clean, organized and surprising, Inhotim was chosen by TripAdvisor as one of the 25 museums in the world best evaluated by users. Really, I have nothing to complain about the structure there, the experience is pleasant from start to finish.
If you are worried about how it will be to get around the museum, don't worry because right at the entrance you receive a map and in each gallery there is a monitor. There are always people walking around the park, so you won't get completely lost.
To make your life a little easier before getting there, I selected the works that I liked the most and that I suggest you include in your itinerary. Write down their names and, when you get there, check on the map where they are located so you can draw your route.
Sonic pavilion, Doug Aitken
Imagine hearing the noises that come from the depths of the Earth? This is the purpose of Doug Aitken's work, where we enter an acoustic room to hear the sounds of the planet at a depth of 200m. Were you curious to know how this is possible? Go there and check it out with your own ears, it's amazing!
Red Shift, Cildo Meireles
Imagine living in a monochromatic world. This is the experience you have when you enter the gallery that houses the work “Desvio para o Vermelho, by Cildo Meireles. It's cool to observe each object in the room and walk around, barefoot, observing the environment.
Forty Part Motet, Janet Cardiff
Located at Galeria Praça, this sound work is composed of 40 different channels composing a choir that sings a beautiful polyphonic composition with eight five-voice choirs. Walking around the room and hearing each of the voices is chilling, it really feels like people are there!
Viewing Machine, Olafur Eliasson
In addition to the galleries, Inhotim has a series of outdoor works, such as this viewing machine by Olafur Eliasson. Super interactive, the machine works like a frame for a painting and as you move it from one side to the other you frame different scenarios.
Cosmococa Gallery, Hélio Oiticica and Neville d’Almeida
Cosmococa Gallery is fun for sure! Very interactive, you will experience different sensations through your senses. You can party with balloons, take a nap and listen to rock'n roll. Oh! Diving is allowed in the gallery pool, so take your bikini and face the icy water!
Magic Squares, Hélio Oiticica
It's impossible to go to Inhotim and not take a picture between the colorful walls of Oiticica's “Magic Squares”. There is something fascinating about this work, which is close to the restaurant that bears the artist's name. It's probably the vibrant colors and geometric shapes overlapping as you walk through the work.
