Medieval Town of Rhodes

The medieval city of Rhodes, without a doubt, is an unmissable tourist spot on the island and therefore it is our first indication of what to do in Rhodes (Greece). Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Medieval City of Rhodes is the most extensive and best-preserved fortified city in Europe.

Built by the Knights of Saint John in the 12th century, there are more than 4km of fortified walls, with fortresses and towers. The streets do not allow vehicle traffic and are an invitation for a pleasant walk through the historic monuments in peace.

Here you will find many taverns, restaurants and shops, all geared towards tourism. Once in the Medieval City of Rhodes, be sure to visit:

Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes: pioneer castle made by the knights. Inside you can find a museum honoring the history of Rhodes and the Grand Master's apartment. Highlight for the stunning mosaic floors, which are pure luxury.

Rua dos Cavaleiros: this street has seven imposing “auberges”, or inns, which date back to the beginning of the 16th century. Each of them represents the seven countries that were part of the Order of Saint John.

Archaeological Museum of Rhodes: located in the Medieval Hospital of the Knights, you will see several ancient items found in Rhodes and other islands of the Dodecanese.

Roloi Clock Tower: best place to get a panoramic view of the Old Town.

Museum of Byzantine Art: take the opportunity to admire the frescoes and icons from the Byzantine period.

Churches of Agia Triada and Agia Aikaterini.

Suleman Mosque: influence of Turkish occupation in Rhodes.

This is the kind of destination where hiring a guide makes all the difference in your travel experience. Check out guided tour options so you can immerse yourself in the rich history of Rhodes on the Get Your Guide website

kritinia castle

There are several castles on the island of Rhodes, but Kritinia Castle deserves a mention. It is close to a village of the same name and is accessible by a staircase leading to the entrance to the fortified walls. After the steps, the reward is the breathtaking view of the sea.

Monolithos Castle

One more highlight of the sights in Rhodes is the Castle of Monolithos. This castle was erected on top of a hill 5 km from the village of Siana, is 236 m high and was built in the 13th century.

The panoramic view of the bay, the island of Chalki and the mountains is breathtaking. In addition, there is a small church and a charming stone arch. These are places that are worth a photo of those to bomb on social networks.

Take the opportunity to take a walk to see the sunset from the castle. Having a guide to explore the region makes a lot of difference!

Kamiros

This archaeological site could not be left out of this list for those looking for what to do in Rhodes (Greece)!

Kamiros is one of the three ancient cities of Rhodes. Built on 3 levels, you will find the Temple of Athena and the Acropolis at the top of the hill. At the middle level, there is the main part of the city, with more residences, and at the lowest level, you will see another temple and the Doric fountain. From the top of the hill you can see the grandeur of this city.

There are signs in Greek and English, which helps a lot and is very difficult to find in Greece. The visit costs around €7.

Valley of butterflies

One of the nicest attractions in Rhodes is the Valley of the Butterflies. The Vplace is located in the north of the island, 26 km from the city and is located between the villages of Paradisi and Theologos.

Between the months of June and September, there are hundreds of butterflies occupying all the trees (all of them!). As the climate during this period is perfect for the reproduction of butterflies, they cover the entire treetop.
