Waiting for the Astronomical Clock to show the procession of the Twelve Apostles

Of course, one of Prague's top sights would be number one on my list. Surely you've already read other blogs or websites with tips on the astronomical clock, and I can only say one thing: it's really a must!

The Astronomical Clock is one of the oldest and most detailed clocks ever made in the world, created by Mikuláš in 1410 and rebuilt years later by Master Hanuš. In addition to telling the time, it also shows the phases of the moon and the movement of the stars.

Every hour, instead of the famous “cuckoo”, the clock shows the procession of the 12 apostles! The “show” takes place every day, from 8 am to 8 pm, at every hour, and attracts thousands of tourists in front of the City Hall, where the clock is, in search of that moment. I confess that I found the “passage” of the apostles very quick, but it is nice to spend some time there in front of it, observing all the details of the clock and also the anxious tourists.

There is a legend that I found very curious to share with you: they say that Hanuš had his eyes pierced to not be able to reproduce the astronomical clock and no other place in the world.

it's worth setting aside a little time of your day to watch the clock and see the procession of the 12 apostles!

Watch the sunset from the Charles Bridge

The Charles Bridge, in Portuguese, was built in 1357 to connect the Old Town with Prague Castle, which is across the river. It gets its name in honor of Emperor Charles IV, who commissioned the construction with “only” 516 meters in length.

It is also worth walking across the bridge, observing its 16 arches and the 30 statues of saints that are lined up on both sides.

Drink absinthe at Absintherie

Prague is known as the city of absinthe, that very strong drink also called the “Bottled Green Fairy” – they say that after drinking it you will see a lot of green fairies around!

Jokes aside, absinthe was widely consumed in Europe between the 19th and 20th centuries, but because of its high alcohol content (70%!) it caused blindness and even death, thus resulting in its ban. But, in the 1990s, the Czech Republic released absinthe and it became a cultural icon of the city, much sought after by tourists.

There you will find several brands, types and flavors. If you want to take it as a gift to that friend of yours, don't worry, you'll be able to buy it in the souvenir shops or markets (there are many there!)

So, tip number 3 is not to miss Absintherie, a kind of “Absinthe Bar”, which also has a museum inside. It's on one of the busy streets of the Old Town, and has a vintage-mysterious decor.

You will love the experience of getting to know Absintherie, I felt like in those old movies from the 70s, and I loved even more the way absinthe is served: they serve it in a super pretty container, with dry ice. In the faucet, water falls on top of a sugar stone, which makes the absinthe sweeter and more delicious. I only had the courage to have one, but I wanted to try several different drinks they had on the menu.

Still at the bar, they leave some products exposed for sale. I took home a glass of absinthe, which I thought was super cute, and a fridge magnet. Great memory of this interesting day!

Explore Prague Castle

Across the river is the famous Prague Castle, which is not actually a castle. In my innocence, castles are those beautiful fairytale constructions, like Cinderella's Castle, you know? But not here: Prague Castle is where the city was founded, as if it were a neighborhood, with a cathedral, museums, gardens, walls, and so on.

You cannot go to Prague and not reserve at least half a day to visit the Castle. Its grandiosity hides a lot of history and imposing constructions, such as the Cathedral of São Vito. Its Gothic style draws attention, and from the inside, even more enchantment. The mosaics on the windows, the golden door and all the details are amazing. You don't have to pay anything to enter.

On the way, some restaurants, a Christmas fair, and museums, which must be paid to visit.

Another really cool stop inside the Castle are the walls! There is a part where you can see the city from the top, a beautiful view of the Charles Bridge and the river.

It is possible to buy some passes to visit all the places in the Castle: if you have more time, go discover more incredible corners of this place rich in history!

Address: 119 08 Prague 1, Czechia

tip: take tram number 22 and cross the city to the Castle!

Eat a Trdelník while strolling through the streets of the Old Town

Trdelník, typical sweet from the Czech Republic, which is nothing more than a dough rolled and roasted over coals, covered with sugar and chestnuts. The smell of it through the streets of Prague was tempting, make sure to enjoy it while strolling through the streets of Prague's Old Town. You certainly won't have such an experience anywhere else!

Take a photo on the Lennon Wall

the Jhon Lennon Wall is nothing more than a completely designed wall, located near the Charles Bridge, in a prime area of the city.

The first “scribble” on the wall emerged as a form of protest against the communists, and even though the police covered the drawings in gray, the protesters would go there and draw everything again, until the end of the dictatorship in the Czech Republic and the wall so it remained!

The homage to Jhon Lennon is due to the time when all this happened. Lennon represented the will to change, and many were inspired by him.

Nowadays you will find Beatles song lyrics, phrases full of inspiration and motivation. It's worth recording the moment!
