Can Picafort - vacation stronghold for families
Can Picafort in the northeast of Mallorca is known and popular as a destination for a beach vacation with the whole family. We wanted to find out if the vacation stronghold has more to offer than the short way to the beach and a rich offer of restaurants and shopping and found out: It does! You can also go on extensive hikes and bike tours to idyllic nature reserves, the water sports on offer are not bad either, especially for sailors and windsurfers, and the nightlife is manageable, but definitely has its charms.
Can Picafort is located in the northeast of Mallorca in the bay of Alcúdia. The town is part of the Plà de Mallorca region and is located in the municipality of Santa Margalida. The main town of the same name, Santa Margalida, is located about 10 km inland from Can Picafort. Together with Son Serra de Marina, the third village of the municipality, more than 11,600 people live here, most of them in Can Picafort. In the summer months, however, this number is far outstripped by the mass of tourists who are on site: Can Picafort has become a residential town that is not completely deserted even in the winter months, but by its very nature it is, through and through, a resort that is fully geared to the wants and needs of summer vacationers.
The center of Can Picafort is located between the seafront promenade and the main street, Passeig Colón, which runs parallel to it. Across the two runs, as a pedestrian zone, the Avenida Josep Trias and extends even further inland. While the more than 1 km long promenade is mainly restaurants, along the main street are mainly stores, supermarkets and the stores of well-known brand manufacturers. In the pedestrian zone there are more restaurants and snack bars, and in the summer months there are also market stalls offering clothes and souvenirs in the evenings. Similar stalls can also be found in the square by the small harbor, which adjoins the beach promenade. There, vacationers are additionally offered snacks and there is a trampoline for children.
Can Picafort is especially popular with families with children, because the resort offers them an almost perfect infrastructure for a relaxed beach vacation and in addition a large number of hotels and apartments directly in the center and near the beach. For this reason, one is neither dependent on transportation, nor long on foot. And if you want to see something different during your vacation, you can explore the coast with excursion boats from the harbor and reach great attractions in the surrounding area on foot or by bike.
The nature reserve of s'Albufera to the north with its idyllic dune landscape and rare plants and birds is made for an excursion. The landscape in the south also invites to extensive hikes. There you can also explore the pre-Christian Talayotic tombs and ruins. From more recent times, standing prominently along the coast, 1,250 meters apart, are the Torres de Defensa (also Torres d'Enfilació): obelisk-like towers used by the navy in the last century to practice navigation.4 things to see in Can Picafort
