When is the best time to visit Melbourne?

The best time to visit Melbourne is between March and May (autumn) or September and November (spring). Temperatures are more pleasant and the city is less crowded, making the weather perfect for exploring the city on foot or by bicycle.

In autumn, the city is all wrapped in beautiful foliage, in spring, although the weather can be more unpredictable with rapid changes in temperature, there are several festivals and you can enjoy an outdoor picnic in one of the beautiful parks scattered around the city.

Summer in Melbourne runs from December to February. The months of December and January have longer, warmer days, with cooler nights and occasional showers. As it is high season, you have to consider that accommodation and transport prices increase substantially!

In the low season (from June to August) the wind gusts are stronger and it is advisable to dress warmly to face the low temperatures. For lovers of the cold, however, it is the best time to visit the city and enjoy the wine and food festivals, jazz concerts, ice skating rinks or dinner in the igloos of Federation Square.

How to get around Melbourne?

Do you know which means of transport are available in the city and which is the most suitable? Here's how to get around Melbourne:

Tram

The best way to get around Melbourne is to take the tram. They run all day and offer multiple routes that criss-cross the city. Tram tickets are called myki and you can use them on trams, buses or trains and they cost from AUD 8.00 (USD 6.00). The Myki Visitor Value Pack AUD 14.00 (USD 11.00) is a rechargeable card with a 7-day pass and, depending on the area of the city you are visiting, it costs from AUD 27.00 (USD 21.00).

There is also a free tram for tourists, the City Circle Tram (#35), which runs on a specific route through the city. Although in high season they can get quite crowded, just wait for the next one. They depart every 12 minutes from Flinders Street Station and make 28 stops across central Melbourne.

Although the main stop is Flinders Street, you can hop off at any of the stops along the route. Some of these are within walking distance of attractions such as the State Library Victoria or the Melbourne Museum.

Trams operate from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm from Sunday to Wednesday and from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm from Thursday to Saturday.

Bus

Base fares are between AUD 2.70 and AUD 3.90 for a two-hour ride. The times vary according to the route, but most buses run between 5 am and midnight.

trains

Most city trains depart from Flinders Street Railway station, while regional and interstate trains depart from Southern Cross station. Hours vary according to the line, but most routes operate from 5:00 am to 3:00 am from Monday to Friday, 24 hours on Saturdays and between 3:30 am and 1:00 am on Sundays. Fares are between AUD 2.70 and AUD 3.90 depending on the region of the city.

Car

We do not recommend renting a car to drive around central Melbourne. With trams crisscrossing the city and the constant flow of passengers hopping on and off, driving can be a harrowing experience. Roads can also be confusing, as traffic rules can vary widely.

Melbourne Airport (MEL) is about 25 km from the city center and to leave the airport a good alternative is the SkyBus, a comfortable executive bus, which has air conditioning and wi-fi and goes to Southern Cross station . It operates 24 hours a day and costs AUD 19.00 (USD 15.00) per person.

By taxi, the cost for the airport x center section can vary between AUD 43.00 and 77.00 (USD 33.00 and 59.00).
