Arequipa Cathedral
Shaken by many earthquakes, especially the one in 2011 that knocked down one of its towers, the Cathedral of Arequipa has been rebuilt several times. Like La Compañia, the Jesuit church in Arequipa, its original construction depicts art from the 17th century.
Arequipa is one of the most beautiful examples of Spanish colonization in Peru and its architecture still holds important treasures from the colonial period. Known by many as the “White City”, thanks to the central houses that were built in silla, a type of porous white volcanic stone, Arequipa still keeps precious scenarios and stories such as Juanita, one of the best preserved mummies in Peru, and the Monastery of Santa Catalina, one of the best preserved cloistered convents in the country.

Monastery of Santa Catalina
Monasterio de Monjas Privado de la Orden de Santa Catalina de Siena, this is the full name of one of the most important attractions in Arequipa.
Founded in 1579, the monastery is so large that it practically represents a small town with its streets, squares and cloisters. Until 1970, nuns in the region lived in a cloistered system. After the Pope's visit, they decided to open part of their facilities to the public and only left their homes in extraordinary situations.
With strong colors and virtually untouched environments, full of works of art, make this place one of the most special addresses in the city.
Visit open hours: Every day from 9am to 5pm / Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am to 8pm. Closed only Christmas, New Year and Good Friday.
Museum of Andean Sanctuaries
Along with the Monastery of Santa Catalina, the Museum of Andean Sanctuaries is one of Arequipa's best attractions. It holds a precious collection that tells the story of sanctuaries that were found in the region's volcanoes.
Thanks to intense studies by the city's universities, a mummy of a girl from the end of the 15th century was found in the Ampato volcano in 1995, who was sacrificed in a ritual to the gods. This discovery is considered one of the most important in the country thanks to its excellent state of preservation.
Known as Juanita, the mummy is considered by many to be the best preserved of all found in ancient Inca territories. Perhaps researchers from archaeological sites in northern Peru do not agree with this statement, but the fact is that it is really important and has resolved many questions for historians while bringing many others with it.
The mummy Juanita is only on display between May and December. In the following months it is the turn of Sarita, another mummy, to receive the public. This process is important to preserve the mummies and continue the studies of the scientific community.
