Würzburg - Germany

Würzburg is a place for those who want to relax and rest and learn about the amazing history about this city. Get the best prices for your trip to Würzburg at bitbook.net.

Würzburg lies in the heart of Franconia and is linked by numerous railway lines and roads. The ideal is to rent a car to do the Romantic Road, but if you prefer to use public transport, you can visit it by arriving by train or by bus from cities such as Frankfurt, Nuremberg, Bamberg, Munich and Stuttgart. Dresden and Berlin, on the other hand, are further away and require a connection midway through.

Crossed by the river Main and owner of a complicated past, Würzburg is now a peaceful city. From ancient peoples like the Celts, to the Germanic aristocracy, many personalities have passed through its stone streets.

Würzburg Residenz, one of the most important historic buildings in the region, considered the maximum representation of German Baroque architecture.

Built between 1720 and 1744, this castle above all castles, as it is called, portrays the era that marked the trajectory of one of the most brilliant courts in Europe: the Counts of Schönborn, known for their passion for construction and their great ideas .

During spring and summer, be sure to walk through the baroque royal gardens, with all their symmetry, fruit trees, colorful flowers and statues.

Market Square (Marktplatz).

Walk through the small streets and take the opportunity to visit the Würzburg Cathedral and St. Mary's Church. Notice the amazing architecture of the buildings along the way, mixing Gothic, Rococo and Baroque styles in perfect harmony.

Alte Mainbrücke.

The bridge has 12 large statues of saints and its first version, made of Romanesque stone, dates back to the year 1120. Don't be alarmed if the image of Charles Bridge comes to mind.

It is there, at the base of Mainbrücke, that everyone meets to enjoy a good glass of silvaner wine, typical of the region.

Cross the bridge and begin your ascent to the Festung Marienberg fortress, one of the imposing symbols of Würzburg. In its more than 12 centuries of history, it has been from a Celtic base to the official residence of Prince-Bishops. Legend has it that a small church was built in the middle of 760 on top of Celtic ruins that existed there.

After serving as the stage for numerous battles and power struggles, the Marienberg was turned into a fortress and rebuilt in 1631 as a baroque palace.

The Würzburg tourist center offers a guided tour in English that explains some of the main details of the local history.

This guided tour is offered between May and October, from Tuesday to Sunday, always at 11 am and the meeting point is at the tourist service office, at Marktplatz 9. The complete tour takes 1 hour and 30 minutes and costs 7 euros per person.

The only problem with the tour is that you regret not staying longer to have a wine on the Alte Mainbrücke.

The historic center is surrounded by an extensive green area that culminates in the gardens of the Würzburg Residenz. Any point within this area is a good location to stay, as the most touristy part of town is quite small and everything is very close by.

In general, the hotels are old, with little shower curtains, heavy carpeting and very dark wood furniture.

Don't worry, bitbook.net carefully selected the hotels worth staying at.

Ghotel

The Hotel is a new, basic and business-oriented hotel. It is a 15-minute walk from the Alte Mainbrücke bridge and is an interesting option for those looking for a price.

Mercure Würzburg am Mainufer

Mercure is a good choice for those who like the always correct standard offered by Accor. The hotel has free wifi, air conditioning (an essential item in the summer), relatively small rooms and newer bathrooms without that old fashioned look. Breakfast is a big buffet.

Gruner Baum

Grüner Baum is charming and feels like you're spending a few days at a friend's house. All in typical Franconian style, the rooms are cozy and wifi and breakfast are free. It is right in the historic center, next to the fortress and the Alte MainBrücke.

Hotel Wurzburger Hof

Opposite the Juliusspital and easily accessible by tram from the train station, the Würzburger Hof is considered the best hotel in the city. The rooms are spacious and classically decorated. It also offers free Wi-Fi and a hearty breakfast. The hotel is close to several restaurants.
