Amsterdam is the largest city and the Dutch capital, according to the Constitution of the Netherlands, with more than 873 thousand inhabitants.

Amsterdam is the largest city and the Dutch capital, according to the Constitution of the Netherlands, with more than 873 thousand inhabitants. The city of The Hague, 50 km away, is just the administrative capital, as well as the capital of the province of South Holland.

Known for its countless canals surrounded by fine brick houses, Amsterdam has established itself as an eclectic, diverse and tolerant city and cultural capital for no traveler to defect. Amsterdam once attracted tourists in search of the freedom conveyed by easy access to sex and drugs. Today, destiny has already proven that it goes far beyond that and the truth is that the famous Red Light District has become one of the least interesting sights in the city.

Among the variety of museums, the beautiful parks, the delicious food and the irresistible little shops, you also have to reserve time for walks in the surroundings. In addition to the suburbs and rural areas of Amsterdam, there are several small towns nearby that you can quickly reach by train and even by bicycle.

If you're coming from any other European city, chances are you'll get a good train itinerary option. Countries like France, United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany and Switzerland have great connections with the Dutch capital.

Understanding the division of neighborhoods in Amsterdam and remembering the names is a bit complicated. Therefore, a good option is to do a lot of research, defining all the attractions and restaurants you want to visit and saving them on Google Maps. With everything saved, you'll have an idea of how close each place is and you'll be able to organize it by region. Be sure to consult the hours and days of operation of each attraction in advance - especially the museums. Knowing the following words will help you a lot to find your way around and use public transport:

noord = north

Zuid = south

osten = east

west = west

A very interesting tip is to download the I Amsterdam City Card application. It brings together the most diverse attractions, divided by style (family, food, art & culture, food, tours) and location on the map, in addition to bringing a summary with information about each one.

Once you understand what the city's transport options are, it's super easy to get around. In addition to a great public transport system, Amsterdam always has options for walking and cycling. The transport you should use are the tram (electric cable car that runs on rails) and the subway. The train works to visit nearby towns; the ferry to cross to the north of Amsterdam and the bus (very eventually) can be useful to reach some places where the metro and train cannot access.

Another important information for planning is that, to visit the Anne Frank House, the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum, it is necessary to buy your ticket in advance or, if you choose to purchase the I Amsterdam City Card, book a time in advance (within the application it is possible to book the day and time). Therefore, the ideal is to start planning with the dates of these museums. The most delicate is the Anne Frank House, which receives fewer visitors per day and therefore fills up faster. Others can be booked less in advance. If you are going during the tulip season (between the end of March and mid-May) and want to visit the Keukenhof, it is also interesting to buy a ticket in advance.

Van gogh museum

One of the most popular museums in the world, the Van Gogh museum is one of my passions in Amsterdam, along with the Anne Frank house of course. This is not an “instagrammable museum”, so go there to learn about the history and appreciate the art of this controversial painter, who was only recognized after his death. It is located on Museumplein (or Museum Square), where the Rijksmuseum, the MOCO Museum and the Stedelijk Museum are also located. It brings together more than 200 paintings, 500 drawings and 700 letters written by Van Gogh. Among my favorite paintings are the most colorful and famous: Sunflowers and The Room.

Anne Frank's House

The famous house at 263 Prinsengracht Street is where Anne Frank lived in hiding with her family between 1942 and 1944, before they were discovered and sent to concentration camps by the German Nazi government. The museum tells a little of the history of the holocaust in the Netherlands through the incredible history of the Frank family and Anne's diaries. In addition to original diary writings and Anne's sentences on the walls, we find objects and photos that belonged to them. But the great emotion is in entering the Secret Annex – where the tiny rooms where the family lived with 4 other people during the years of hiding are located.

The neighborhood where the Anne Frank House is located is undoubtedly one of the most charming in the city. Once a working-class neighborhood, it was transformed with gentrification and attracted small shops and delicious restaurants. Leave time to walk around there without commitment. If you go on a Saturday morning, be sure to visit the Noordermarkt and its organic market.

Don't miss the opportunity to visit this beautiful place, don't know how to go? Don't worry, go to bitbook.net and easily book all you'll need to get there and have a great time.
