Rosh Hanikra - Israel

undefined

Today BitBook will show you the fantastic Rosh Hanikra.

In the extreme north of Israel, in the Western Galilee, amazing limestone caves formed by the erosion of the Mediterranean Sea under an ancient rock separate the border between Israel and Lebanon. From there, it is possible to observe the sound and the contrast between the blue waves that beat strongly inside the dark caves or on the almost white external surfaces of the limestone rocks. Rosh Hanikra ( 'head of the caves') is a beautiful nature reserve and one of the most sought after attractions in the Western Galilee.

To get to the caves, you have to take a red or yellow cable car, known as the steepest in the world. The trip is short, just 2 minutes, but the view is incredible. The first step is to watch an audiovisual presentation, in a cinema inside a cave, which tells the story of the place. Rosh Hanikra is located on a mountain called the Stairs Mountain Range. It is believed that, in the year 333 BC, Alexander the Great was forced to build a ladder on the side of the mountain to pass with his army. Many armies then passed through there, including Assyrians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs and Crusaders.

During the British mandate in Palestine after World War I, the British paved the route and then, in 1941, built a tunnel through the rocks, which connected the Israeli city of Haifa with Beirut and Tripoli, Lebanon. With the passage of a train, they managed to connect a long route between Sinai, Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Turkey and Europe. When Israel started its war of independence, in 1947/48, the fear that Lebanon would send its army overland led a group of Israelis to implode the tunnel, which is closed to this day. On the other side of the screen where we watch the film that tells this whole story is the wall that separates Israel from Lebanon today.

The Rosh Hanikra caves are formed from limestone and are the result of thousands of years of geophysical processes, which have included underground shocks that created gaps between rocks; penetration of rainfall into these gaps and erosion caused by waves during storms. The tunnel of the caves is 200m long, but the landscape outside is also stunning! Depending on the time of year, be prepared for a hot and very humid place.

Tourists are received by a member of the kibbutz and he gives a guided tour of the place, explaining the operation and daily life in the kibbutz and passing through the orchard, plantations and stable.
