The history of Isla Mujeres is quite interesting. A long time ago, in the pre-Columbian period, the island was completely dominated by the Mayans and considered sacred.
The Mayan civilization was polytheistic (they believed in several gods) and they dedicated the island to the goddess Ixchel. She was considered the goddess of fertility, healing, the moon and weaving. The Mayans scattered Ixchel cult figures throughout the island. She is represented as an old woman pouring a pitcher full of water over the earth, and also as an old woman weaving on a waist loom.
When the Spaniards discovered the island in the 16th century and saw all those female representations, they named the island Isla Mujeres.
There are numerous ways to get to Isla Mujeres and they are all pretty easy. On your own, departing from the port region of Cancún, in Puerto Juaréz, you can take a ferry boat directly to Isla Mujeres.
For those staying in the Zona Hoteleria in Cancun, there are several starting points. In this region the ticket is usually more expensive. The cheapest route is the one that leaves from Playa Tortugas and is also the one with the most flexible itinerary, with hourly boats. It is also possible to board at El Embarcadero and Playa Caracol.
The ideal is to leave early and book at least a whole day to enjoy all the best that the island has to offer. The boat trip is short and the view of the mainland is phenomenal.
Getting around the island is very easy, either on foot, or you can rent one of the many golf carts scattered around the place. Another option is taxis, but I don't really recommend it.
Despite being small, Isla Mujeres offers entertainment for all tastes. Dive parks, cinema beaches, cafes, good quality restaurants
Playa Norte
This is perhaps one of the best beaches in the region. Playa Norte is the main reason tourists travel from Cancun to Isla Mujeres. The combination of warm and crystalline water, white sand, year-round sunshine and a bucolic climate make this beach the ideal place to recharge your batteries.
Walk into the sea in waist-deep water and dive with the colorful fish that live there! If you enjoy snoklel this is the ideal spot. Water visibility is excellent and the local marine fauna is super colorful.
Important tip: arrive early to see the best of this paradise. This is one of the most popular beaches in the region and tends to get crowded every day of the week.
Center of Isla Mujeres
This is where the various restaurants and shops that we love when traveling are! Stroll around clothing stores, handicrafts and decorative pieces from the local tradition.
Choose a nice place to eat and be sure to try some of the best margaritas in all of Mexico!
During the night the bars and restaurants tend to be full, ensuring entertainment for all tastes.
Punta Sur
At the southern end of the island is this small environmental park where there are several statues that decorate the landscape. What draws attention are the iguanas that live there!
The place has an incredible view of the sea, perfect for watching the sunset. There are also the ruins of the temple of Ixchel, the goddess that the Mayans worshiped on the island.
Garrafon Bay
This is one of the most famous places on Isla Mujeres. It is a diving area with a picturesque view of a wooden pier and the clear blue sea.
In this area are the best diving clubs in Isla Mujeres, Garrafón de La Castilla and Garrafón Park.
For those who want to enjoy the comfort of a park, Garrafón Park is much more modest than the famous parks in Cancún, and has an excellent diving area where you can see different species of fish and corals.
Muse Isla Mujeres
This is a different museum. The MUSA, or Underwater Museum of Art, brings together a collection of 500 pieces of art created at the bottom of the sea. It is ideal for anyone who has mastered some scuba diving techniques. If you want, you can take a basic course to be able to venture into this incredible tour.

Preferred by tourists, this restaurant brings together the most sophisticated in local cuisine, with fresh seafood, bold atmosphere and differentiated service. Located in the Boulevard Paseo area, it is a little outside the hubbub of downtown. The food is prepared right before your eyes and the chefs are aware of the main trends in world cuisine. Make a reservation, as the house is small and tends to get crowded.
Not far from Playa Norte is this charming family restaurant specializing in Mexican cuisine and with several gluten free and vegetarian options. The service is personalized and all ingredients are local. Be sure to try the drinks, the house has recognized prominence when it comes to margaritas.
