Salzburg Cathedral is amazing, as is the whole city. Being in this place makes us think and reflect on the past of humanity and all its transformation.

Cathedrals usually enchant for their grandeur and beauty, and for those who visit the Salzburg Cathedral, the charm is no different: they are 81 meters high, architecture in the Italian Baroque style and a simply wonderful dome. The church is in the beautiful city of Salzburg, Austria , approximately 300 km from Vienna, capital of Austria.

Salzburg is considered the fourth largest city in Austria with approximately 150,000 inhabitants and its historic center has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1996.

It is worth knowing the castle and seeing the structure of the fort and its protection capacity, which housed the archbishops and princes who headed the toll collection on the Salzach river, which runs through the entire city. From the square that is under the castle, the Salzburg Cathedral is located.

The Salzburg Cathedral

The history of Salzburg Cathedral is synonymous with strength and hard work, as the church had to be rebuilt three times for different reasons. The first construction is from the year 774 and lasted until the year 1167, when a great fire that dominated the whole city and ruined the construction. Ten years after that tragedy, the church was rebuilt and even more beautiful.

On December 11, 1598, another fire destroyed much of the cathedral, which had to be demolished.

In the year 1628 the cathedral was designed and rebuilt by the famous Italian architect Santino Solari, and ended up becoming the first baroque church in the region north of the Alps.

For centuries the place remained intact, being the scene of the baptism of one of the greatest icons of classical music: Wolgang Amadeus Mozart. The composer was baptized in the Romanesque bronze font, which today stands next to the entrance, the day after his birth on January 28, 1756 at 10 am.

Years after his baptism, Mozart became organist at Salzburg Cathedral from 1779 to 1781, where he played for the first time at the age of 23 the composition 'Mass of the Heart' - a musical parallel that deals with forgiveness, peace and the relationship between them.

Two fires had already destroyed the Salzburg Cathedral, but the site still suffered once more: on October 16, 1944 an aerial bomb completely destroyed the dome, adding another historic tragedy of the Second World War.

On May 1, 1959, after a difficult post-war period, the cathedral was reopened and has remained the same since this reconstruction.

Currently, the site has a very well decorated facade, with two towers and portals that give access to the bronze doors of the Salzburg Cathedral. In the central part, you can admire four statues of the evangelists Saint Matthew, Saint Mark, Saint Luke and Saint John.

Of the seven original bells of the cathedral, there are still two that ring to this day, the others were seized during the wars or merged in the fires that happened in the church. Inside, you can visit a crypt where all the archbishops of Salzburg Cathedral are buried.

Another curiosity is that the ceiling of the Cathedral is all worked showing the walk of Jesus and the more you enter the church, the more it becomes more illuminated, in the end showing the resurrection of Christ.

Festival

The city itself is driven by art and music and holds the annual Salzburg Festival, when Mozart's works are played and staged in the cathedral square, in addition to other musical and cultural attractions. The event takes place every year during the summer, usually starting in the last week of July and continuing until the last week of August, with attractions and other information that can be consulted on the festival's website.

Salzburg

If you have time in the city, it is worth visiting the Mozart museum, which was the composer's residence until he moved to Vienna. The house, as well as the cathedral, had parts destroyed during World War II, but it was rebuilt and opened to visitors in 1996.

Another cool part of exploring in the city are the secular restaurants! There is one more interesting than the other. And finally, take a trip to the Mirabel Palace, well known for having been the home of one of the mistresses of one of the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg. Today the palace is a wedding icon.
