Salzburg is a small town in the Austrian countryside that looks like it was designed to exist! Well known for being the birthplace of Mozart and for being a reference in classical music festivals around the world, Salzburg impresses with so many stories in the streets. What also draws a lot of attention is the artistic vein that the city transmits, everything here naturally turns to music, opera, ballet, concerts and anything else you can imagine. If your heart is still unaware of the power of art, believe me, this place will make you feel the incredible and generous atmosphere that it conveys. It's impossible not to surrender to so much sensitivity.

Although Salzburg is small, there are many things to do around here. To explore all its riches and feel the essence and atmosphere of the place, the ideal is to stay in the city for at least two full days. And as its location is very privileged, close to picturesque towns, if you want to get to know the region, we suggest using Salzburg as your base city. Day trips to Hallstat, St. Wolfgag and Berchtesgaden are super nominated.

A brief summary of the history

Just for you to have an idea, the historic center of Salzburg has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Traces indicate that the city has existed since the Neolithic period, around 12,000 years ago when agriculture began, and that the first rulers were the Celts.

Salzburg was also an important city during the Roman Empire, but it was in the 8th century, after a period in ruins, that the city rose again, led by archbishops. It was at this same time that it came to be called Salzburg: Salt Castle. These archbishops centuries and centuries later became princes (prince-archbishops) and ruled the city until the 19th century, when the city became part of the Habsburg empire.

During the reign of the archbishops, architecture also took shape and Salzburg became a baroque city. In the 17th century Italian and Austrian artists left their mark on Salzburg and today Baroque and Rococo dominate the city's historic landscape.

During the Second World War, several parts and monuments were damaged, and later rebuilt with the same characteristics. Today Salzburg is an Austrian tourist hub and receives thousands of tourists all year round. I was impressed with the city's tourism structure and the care that the inhabitants and government show with the historical heritage.

The best way to explore this beautiful city is on foot! The historic center of Salzburg is very well detailed on local maps and the tourist structure is very well oriented, so it's easy to find! Before starting to explore the city, a very important detail is to acquire the SALZBURG CARD, the city tourist pass, which covers ALL tours in Salzburg and several other attractions in the region in a period of: 24, 48 and 72 hours ( you choose the pass according to your stay).

Mirabell Palace and Gardens

This imposing baroque palace has a lot of history to tell. Built in 1606 at the behest of Archbishop Wolf Dietrich, the palace was a gift to his beloved Jewish mistress Salome. The palace's neoclassical gardens are an attraction in their own right, as they are so beautiful. Here, scenes from the film Noviça Rebelde were filmed. During the night, the Palace constantly offers small concerts inspired by Mozart, I went and I really enjoyed it. It's worth checking the schedule!

Fortress Hohensalzburg

Located at the top of a hill, dominating the landscape of the entire city, this fortress dating back to the 11th century is one of the oldest and most well-preserved in all of Europe. Local residents say that the fortress was never attacked directly, and that the two times it was threatened, once by Napoleon's troops, and once by Hitler's troops, the fort was amicably surrendered.

The cable car ride up to the fortress is included in the SALZBURG CARD and those who hold the card skip the queue!

Mozart's birthplace and Mozart-Wohnhaus

Salzburg is known as the city of the great artist Mozart, so understanding his life is part of immersing yourself in the historical context of the city. These two monuments are the houses in which the artist lived. The first house was where Mozart was born and lived with his family for years. The second Mozart Wohnhaus, and the one I particularly liked the most, is the house where he lived as an adult, and dynamically exposes the artist's life. Both tickets are included in the SALZBURG CARD, so I suggest entering both.

Salzburg Cathedral

Salzburger Dom is a special place and I suggest that before visiting it you understand a little of what happened in this space. Here Mozart was baptized and later became an organist, where he played his composition Coronation Mass for the first time. The cathedral dates back to 774 and has survived eight fires. During World War II, its dome was completely destroyed, and later rebuilt.

Before entering the cathedral, notice that on the façade there are three different dates, each one representing an important moment of reconstruction of the holy cathedral.

Residence in Salzburg

This incredible palatial museum was home to archbishops for hundreds and hundreds of years. This luxurious residence has over 180 rooms and holds one of Rembrandt's most famous paintings, Old Lady Praying. The Residenz is also the stage for beautiful concerts. The day I visited the palace I had the privilege of watching a super intimate show in one of its rooms. I just loved it.

Be sure to pick up the audio guide at the entrance, it will be very useful during your tour!

Salzburg Museum

Located in the historic center of Salzburg, the museum explains the city's history in detail. Divided into floors, the Salzburg Museum is very technical and features a very grand collection of arts and relics from important periods in the city's trajectory. However, I recommend visiting it only if you speak English, otherwise it will be difficult to understand the context of the works and how the stories are told.
