It is impossible to summarize this city in just one text, but if you have little time, or want to visit the best of Brussels, here are some tips:

grand place

This is considered by many specialists and historians as the most beautiful square in the world. Dating back to the 17th century, it is the finest example of typical Belgian architecture. It is located in the heart of Brussels and forms part of the architectural ensemble that includes the city hall (known as the Hôtel de Ville) and the City Hall of Brussels.

Every two years, the traditional Flower Carpet of Brussels takes place there, when the center of the square is lined with drawings made with natural flowers. It is impossible to get to know the square without being enchanted by the details in gold on the facades of the buildings. The wealth of elements is jaw-dropping. The famous Maison du Roi, or House of the King, is one of the most impressive examples of neo-Gothic style.

On the outskirts of the Grand Place is also Le Círio, a mega traditional café that is really worth visiting.

Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert

Not far from the Grand Place is this stunning shopping gallery dating back to 1846. It forms part of the group of great European galleries, typical of the Romantic period and the Belle Époque, alongside Galeries Lafayette, in Paris, and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II , in Milan.

The iron-framed glass ceiling is its trademark. The atmosphere is bright and sumptuous and it is impossible not to spend hours admiring the shop windows. This is the place for those who like to shop and enjoy good cafes and restaurants. Be sure to visit the famous Godiva chocolate shop, voted one of the best in the world.

Church of Notre Dame du Sablon

A little outside the center, in the upper part of Brussels, is this masterpiece of religious art. The Belgian Notre Dame may not be as imposing as the French one, but it impresses the visitor with its richly detailed decoration and its peculiar history. The original chapel was founded by the order of archers in the 12th century. Soon the place became a pilgrimage point and began to be decorated with the best of Belgian art. Its stained glass windows and Baroque-style marble altars are the highlight.

Extra tip: in the square behind the church, every Saturday and Sunday morning, the traditional Marché des Antiquaires du Sablon takes place, an antiques fair. Nearby is also one of the best chocolatiers in town, Wittamer.

Manneken Pis and Jeanneke Pis

One of the most famous images of Brussels is perhaps its smallest monument. The Manneken Pis, or “peeing boy”, is the city's most celebrated fountain and may disappoint for its diminutive size – just 61 centimetres. Anyway, the statue is close to the Grand Place, so it's worth passing by. You will find many souvenirs with the image of this shameless little boy.

Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium

This set of museums brings together the largest art collection in Belgium. In the center of the city are the Museum of Ancient Art and the Museum of Modern Art, which can be visited in just one walk. The building is one of the most beautiful in the country, in a classic style, with a monumental façade.

In the upper part of the building is the Museum of Ancient Art, where you will find an incredible collection of works from different periods and artists such as Van Dyck and Rubens. The flamenco art exhibition is one of the largest in the world. The Museum of Modern Art, located in the basement, is mainly focused on the Belgian surrealist movement and has a huge section dedicated to the master René Magritte.

Cathedral Collegiale des Saint Michel et Gudule

São Miguel and Santa Gúdula are the patron saints of the city and this explains the artistic care employed in this church. The foundations of this incredible Gothic cathedral date back to the year 1047, and it took centuries for the church to reach its current shape. Today this is the most imposing temple in Brussels, with its 64-meter high towers and unique style. Its interior is a walk through different periods of art, ranging from Gothic to Renaissance Baroque. Be sure to visit the attached archaeological research areas, with remains from the Roman Empire.
