Prepare your backpacks and suitcases for an unforgettable trip to Seville with BitBook.net!

The city of Seville is the capital of the province of Seville and lies within the state of Andalusia, in the southwest region of Spain. The city is the fourth most populous in Spain, and the birthplace of the sevillanas, a dance similar to flamenco.

Seville is also one of the most important with regard to the production of Spanish classical music, and you can see independent guitarists in the streets and avenues of the city.

Seville is an open-air museum in which it is possible to observe remnants of various peoples who lived here. They are vestiges from the Roman past, from the time when the city was called Itálica, through the Muslim invasion, the prosperous Christian, Renaissance, Baroque period until the Napoleonic wars and today.

This multicultural city has many facets that it is a delight to unravel. One of the most important moments and one that you will see with greater recurrence in the streets and museums of the city, will be the period of Moorish dominion that lasted about 7 centuries (711 to 1492). The city at this time ended up acquiring very unique characteristics that later became known as Mudéjar architecture. This style is characteristic throughout the Iberian peninsula, having certain particularities according to the region in which it is located.

After this long period of Arab rule, already in the 16th century, Spain was taken over by the Christians and entered an era of expansion and prosperity. Seville in a short time became the Spanish commercial center with the world and consequently one of the most cosmopolitan and important cities in Europe.

From this prosperous period, we can appreciate the sacred Renaissance and Baroque art recorded in many city blocks through splendid buildings. A show of history and art through the streets of Seville. Oh, and it was also during this period that Spain conquered America.

As time went by, came the Napoleonic wars, the Habsburg dynasty, the War of Succession, the Spanish Civil War, and many events that determined the rich and intense history of Seville. This Spanish metropolis is today a mixture of sensations that, with its unique style, manages to capture the visitor's attention at every turn it turns.

The Real Alcázar, or Real Alcázares, is one of those unimaginable buildings whose existence cannot be explained, you can only observe and appreciate it. The palace, which was one of the most important during the Arab stay in Spain, today has influences from all the cultures that passed through there. Each corridor, each room and each open space is an invitation to explore a world of details, whether on the walls, tiles, pilasters, ceilings or wherever you look.

Scenarios that seem to be taken from an ancient reign or from the Game of Thrones series are very common, from the Hall of Ambassadors and all the way to the Courtyard of Maidens. Really, set aside a good part of the day to wander the halls and absorb a bit of the lifestyle they had back then.

Another incredible place is the Seville Cathedral which is, without exaggeration, the largest Christian Gothic cathedral and one of the most beautiful in Europe. It was built on the same site as a large mosque, acquiring various influences and architectural molds from Arab culture. From large horseshoe-shaped arches to its altars, whether Mudejar, Gothic, Renaissance or even Baroque.

The interior of the cathedral justifies the need for a guide. There are many precious details to understand, from the celebrities and notables who were buried there to the sacred scenes from the life of Jesus that adorn the sacred site.

Right next to the cathedral is the Giralda, which is one of the landmarks that still remain from the Muslim era in the city. Today it serves as the belfry for the new cathedral, but originally it was intended to be the lighthouse, or tower, of the grand mosque, like the Hassan Tower of Rabat.

However, after the reconquest of the city by the Christians (which I told you about briefly above), two floors with Renaissance influences, nicknamed “Giraldillo”, were added. The tower can be visited, with access to the top and the view is surreal and beautiful. But, as is well known, to get to paradise you have to struggle! There are 35 flights of stairs to be able to have this privilege, with the right to fatigue and tiredness. I can assure you it's worth every step! However, if you don't really want to go through that effort, it is possible to see the tower completely lit up at night, giving the feeling of being made of gold. It's another wonderful experience!
