Lakeland

Lakeland is a city located about 1 hour from downtown Orlando, known for its parks, museums and cultural events. It has a small town charm, with the facilities, services and even size of a big city.

Visit to Bonnet Springs Park, a beautiful public park that offers many activities such as a playground, butterfly garden, greenhouse. Also, that's where the Florida Children's Museum is located, which is practically an indoor park for children. It has lots of areas to play with as they learn about many different subjects like filmmaking, sound mixing, physics and much more. Entrance to the park is free; the museum has a ticket and costs $15 per person. Take the free train that goes all the way around the park and get off at the areas that interest you the most.

The Polk Museum of Art is another popular venue, with many art exhibits and cultural events throughout the year. It features modern and ancient works from Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas. And the best part: admission is free.

Another popular option in Lakeland for nature lovers is to visit the Circle B Bar Reserve, a nature preserve with hiking trails, wildlife viewing. Visitors can see crocodiles, alligators, turtles and a wide variety of native birds. However, it is a little further away from the central region; around 30 minutes by car.

The city is also famous for its food scene, with many local restaurants serving delicious dishes. Some of the most popular places are in the city center, which is worth a visit, whether for a meal or just to stroll through the streets full of shops, cafes and bars with live music. I recommend the Nineteen61 restaurant, which serves Latin cuisine.

And just outside the center is Lake Mirror Park, which offers incredible views of the lake and an art deco pavilion. Walk there and take the opportunity to stroll through Hollis Garden Park, a breathtaking botanical garden with many rare and exotic plants.

Daytona Beach

Daytona Beach is a city located approximately 1 hour from Orlando, known as the motoring capital of the world. Daytona International Speedway is a must-see for motor racing fans, offering track tours, behind-the-scenes tours and museum tours for prices starting at $25 adult and $20 child. It is recommended to book in advance through the website.

Daytona Beach, famous for its white sand beaches, is another popular attraction with many activities such as fishing, boating and parasailing. The Daytona Beach Boardwalk and Pier offers many entertainment options, including arcade games, roller coasters and other exciting attractions, as well as shops, bars, restaurants and activities for all ages.

For history buffs, the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse & Museum is an interesting option. This lighthouse is over 130 years old and has been turned into a museum and offers stunning views of the Daytona coastline at very popular prices: $7 adults and $2 children, but there is no elevator and there are 203 steps to the top.

Nearby there is the Marine Science Center, a center for research and rehabilitation of marine animals, where you can learn about the animals, their customs and the treatments they are undergoing. Tickets from $5.

Winter Haven

Winter Haven is a charming town located about an hour's drive from Orlando. The city is known for being home to the famous Legoland Florida theme park and the newest Peppa Pig Theme Park, but the city has much more to offer. By the way, one of the oldest attractions in Florida, the Cypress Gardens, had been successful in the region since the 1930s. Today, the mix of botanical garden and theme park is now inside Legoland.

For those who enjoy animals, Safari Wilderness is an excellent choice. During the tour in a large truck, it is possible to see and interact with several animals for $119 per person. If you are looking for something more affordable, there is the option of the Drive-thru, where you make the journey in your own car, which costs $125 per vehicle with up to 7 people.

For architecture lovers, Winter Haven has the largest collection of works by Frank Lloyd Wright. You can buy a map for $5 and tour on your own, or hire one of the guided tours with prices starting at $10 per person.

For those who enjoy history and culture, the city has the small Museum of Winter Haven History’s, which features exhibits on the city’s rich history, as well as the Ritz Theater, a historic landmark that offers a variety of performances and events. Take the opportunity to stroll through the city center.

Formed by a series of lakes, Winter Haven is a great place for water sports and contemplative boating, and has an array of charming shops, restaurants and cafes, perfect for strolling.

Tampa

Tampa is a bustling and diverse city located approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes from Orlando. Busch Gardens, with its many roller coasters as well as a zoo, is arguably the city's most popular attraction, but the city has much more to offer.

The Riverwalk is one of the nicest places to go for a walk. It is a promenade along the Hillsborough River, with many restaurants and bars overlooking the river. There are also several attractions in the area, such as the Tampa Bay History Center, an interesting museum that tells the history of the city and region (tickets from $13). And also the Armature Works, a kind of market with several small restaurants installed in an old tram maintenance shed. You can have your meal at one of the tables inside the shed, or on the beautiful lawn outside. The food options are many, but I tried Zukku Sushi and I recommend it.

The largest aquarium in Florida, the Florida Aquarium is also one of the region's famous attractions, with over 9,000 animals of over 190 different species. Tickets cost $38 adults and $22 children.

Ybor City is a historic and lively area, with many bars and restaurants, as well as many cigar shops, as Cuban cigars were manufactured in this region by immigrants in the late 19th century. A super interesting place to walk around and have a meal. I recommend Columbia, a Spanish restaurant founded there in 1905 by a Cuban family. The tapas are delicious. The house salad, original recipe from 1905, and sangria are prepared at the table.
